Hi,

Just curious to which polish you guys use? I have a lovely "Bronze" 3000M ...I've already polished it with Autoglym and it looks great but I was wondering if there was any better stuff out there?

Cheers,
Mark

Moribus, I hope you don't mind a Chim owner adding his tuppence worth...

I used Autoglym for years, but one of my mates bought me a load of Meguiars (www.meguiars.co.uk/) bits and pieces last birthday, and the results were amazing. I certainly wouldn't consider using anything else anymore...

I use:

Shampoo: Soft Wash Gel
Prep: Deed Crystal Paint Cleaner
Polish: Deep Crystal Polish
Wax: Deep Crystal Carnuba Wax
Gloss: Autoglym extra gloss protection

It seems like a few hoops to jump through (and it does take ages to go through all the 'stages'), but the results are awesome. I also use Autoglym alloy wheel sealant (amazing stuff, all the brake dust etc comes off with a regular hose after using it) and Armourall tyre blackener-type stuff.

Is your car two-pack paint or cellulose. Some polishes can be abrasive on the latter (ie remove quite a lot of paint when applied), read the label. I always used to use a traditional turtle wax cream as it was safe with the paintwork.

Just take care, you don't want a gel-coat car in a few months time.

Hi Davidy,

I'm not sure what type of paint it is...how do I know?
It's a 1977 3000M Can't be sure if it's been resprayed during it's life, there is nothing in the history file, although there was an insurance claim for a smash in the front so there's a chance the bonnet (and/or front wings) have been resprayed at some point.

Try a bit of polish on a 'quiet' area of the car, if loads comes off onto the cloth, the chances are its cellulose.

My 77 Taimar was cellulose (but resprayed in mid eighties) for most of the car but the bonnet was two-pack as was one of the rear wings.

On the chassis plate there is a paint code. This is likely to be a Ault and Wieborg no. (my spelling here may be wrong) as thats what the factory used iround this period. Id you go to an old fashioned spray shop they will be able to trace that code through to its modern equivalent.

Hope that helps

David

BTW I'd expect Adrian Venn to know the answer!
