I was at the Historic Motorsport Show at the weekend and spoke to Safety Devices about fitting a cage in a 3000M. Admittedly it was busy and they had little time to think about it but the reply was "about £2500-£3000 mate". Safety Devices do good work but are usually expensive, Rollcentre are price competitive with SD ususally. The new boys on the block are Caged, see: www.therollcagepeople.com/ but they are based in Westbury in Wiltshire. I'm intending to give them a call ref. a similar job on my 3000M shortly.

The point is, if you want a custom cage built into a fibreglass bodied car, with an MSA 'Approved Roll Cage' certificate, not many people can do it and it will cost. Alternatively, you can build your own to the diagrams in the MSA Blue Book. SD quite happily sell CDS tube, clamps, other components and specialist tools.

Let's keep in touch if we find a good solution at the right price!

>>> everytime I get the chance to lean on the roof of an M without a windscreen and watch it wobble.<<<

Try the same thing with a Citroen AX

It may be possible to bolt something to the glassbibre but personally I wouldn't be happy racing with that setup. Since the body has to come off the chassis with my car in any case, I'm intending to reinforce the chassis and create mounting points for a cage, then fit the cage through holes in the body. It can be waterproofed with sealant afterwards.

I haven't yet found anyone who makes a part or full cage for this car....

I've had a crazed idea though.... the M uses a TR6 back axle, so maybe a TR6 cage (readily available as TR6s are raced and rallied a lot) would be about right? I've got someone measuring a TR6 cage at the moment to see if it might at least make the basis of an M cage.

One other suggestion in a Viz magazine 'Top Tips' style:

"When driving a TVR 3000M, a passenger with a very strong neck and who's taller than you makes an ideal yet inexpensive roll cage."

Got to say as an ex-biker (50K a year) (saw your profile) you have got to think that god forbid, that if you turn the car over at least the fibreglass will crush slower and safer(and the windscreen will help) than if you tipped your bike.
Why are you thinking this way, how many 3000M's do you now of that have been stacked.
I love driving my car hard, but would have to go some to turn it over and if I did then I would have pushed it too far.
As I have said before if you are that scared of the car don't ride bikes or drive fast cars and get yourself a Volvo.
You get these cars for the fun of owning them and the fun of seat in the pants driving, I have had the privilege of driving a lot of cars and bikes on the
market, but I have got to say my Tiv is the nearest to a bike I can get and the best fun I have had without spending loads of money.
Sorry to rant but take the car as it was made to be used.
Rant over.

Edited to add only a northern g!t would get away with taking photos of his bike in the house.

Fair comments on the rollbar and I can't really say too much about keeping a bike in the house. When I met the wife I had a bike I was rebuilding on the kitchen table.

Roll cages are a good idea for track days. I witnessed a 3000M go off in a big way at Pembery last year. Without the cage the injuries sustained would have been much worse - no doubt about it.

The other benefit of the cage is that it allows the safe use of harnesses in the car.

Ian Bannister has had some cages made I beleive, he posts on here under TVR79.

(I also have a bike that I can't replace and it will find its way into the house eventually )

Also I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the Ring last week in July. Theres about 70 of us this year. Maybe I could follow you round for a couple of laps in order to warm my tyres up.

I presume that would be with me towing you

I would be interested in going to the ring, will have to see what dates the wife has booked for holidays.

Have you tried Rollcentre (www.rollcentre.com, tel. 01480.404652) ? I know that they at least once did one for a 3000M.

Picture the scene..... Mr Drifting turns up at the race meeting for scruntineering:
SCRUTINEER: "Bloody hell! There's no roll cage in this car!"
DRIFTING: (and I quote) "Why are you thinking this way, how many 3000M's do you now of that have been stacked?"
SCRUTINEER: "****! @@@! "
DRIFTING: "I'll get me coat then shall I?"

The point is, rollcages are mandatory for racing and you'd have to have a screw loose not to have one in a regular track day car. Would you do a trackday on your bike with no helmet or leathers??

AG - I checked out the TR6 rollcage thing and the chap with the TR6 rear cage insists it's only 33 inches wide. And the internal width of the M is just over 50 inches, so not much use I reckon.

Here's wishing all TVR nuts safe fun on road and track

R.

Agree with all that has been said but if you looked at AGs first post it was about a roll bar for a 3000M, without any mention of use on track days.
The only reason for the rant is that I do get peeded off with people that buy these cars and then moan about the lack of protection and no bloody abs etc.
Totaly understand wanting safety on the track, but still can't understand people that buy TVR's and the like and then moan that they are not safe cars.
Why buy the bloody thing in the first place.?

Really pleased you took that in good sport Grant - I was worried you might not and didn't aim to be offensive! And you're right about the initial thread. The racing thing is my personal angle as my rebuild is designed to produce a race car and not a road car.

Thanks for the offer of a blat in your motor but Essex is a bit far off for me... see my profile (especially the excellent picture of a rollcage in my current race car!).
