Why do people feel the need to blank out the reg no on cars for sale, seems pointless as my first question would be what is it !

Not sure in this scenario. I know on auto trader, less scrupulous dealers employ this technique to prevent interested parties from checking the VOSA online site for MOT history of a vehicle. On the assumption that the facts may not align with the sellers often used "mint" and "well looked after" description.
I saw one myself once when looking for my sons first drive. Advertised as honest , solid and well looked after, you won't find a better example at this price etc.
The VOSA history listed a recent fail as structurally dangerous and shouldn't be driven or similar wording.
It's a valuable resource to get a better picture

Possibly because he is concerned about someone cloning his registration? His neighbour told him about a person down the pub whose brother’s cousin (second removed) used to work with a guy whose best friend’s mate had his plate cloned in 2003.

It annoys me too, when wanting to buy a car, so much so that I just look elsewhere.

Exactly ! Starting off withholding something doesn’t help a sale IMO plus it’s a suspect ‘I don’t want you to look at the MOT history’ (I’m not suggesting it is in this case, it’s the principal).
With another car marque the difference between engine castings makes a big difference to value and so many ads are angled just right to avoid showing that part of the engine.
