The point is Dollyman1850, that if you have a car worth for example £10k and then spend £20k on its restoration, it doesn’t then become a £30k car. There are not many cars that you can expect to recoup back your restoration costs and a Taimar certainly isn’t one of them.
The point is TR4 man that as long as censored don't want to value a restored TVR properly then the values of the cars will never approach realistic sums.. I find it quite sad that so called enthusiasts do their level best to talk down an exclusive Hand Built British Sportscar which was made in very few numbers relatively speaking when all around British examples of mediocrity are selling for high 20 - 30k sums... So as an enthusiast you don't see a Pre 80's TVR worth more than the price of a bargain basement shopping run about.. As long as that mentality persists you will never see a properly restored TVR for sale... Thank goodness there are a very small circle of realistic owners and enthusiasts out there who are prepared to invest the correct amount for a properly restored car for their own enjoyment. It is my experience that these cars change hands infrequently often without advertising amongst true enthusiasts. For the rest of the fair weather variety you can choose from the Hammerite specials.!!

For me i am very pleased the price of TVRs is not crazy so i can enjoy them.
I am also the owner of a 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint fhc and was very lucky to buy it when the prices were less. To be honest i could not buy a Lotus Elan Sprint now.
But if i saw a TVR that i fancied i could.

Low value cars = very few cars properly restored = more cars being scraped or broken for spares.

That’s not a good place to be.

I think if this Taimar had initially been priced sub 30k and the paint had been finished better it would not be getting the press it has and may well have sold.

Everybody is entitled to view values and restorations as they wish - no right or wrong, just opinions.

FWIW my opinion is that all the cars I would buy have a price which is way too high and all the cars I've ever sold were worth so much more. It's just the way it is wink

For me the issue here is the way the price went down.
This car seems for sure well restored (beside the small cracks on the roof which are a bit scary for me), the first price was too high, this one is more reasonable (specially for us on the continent). However, personally, this big drop makes me wondering if the seller is serious, you cannot say "look my car is astonishing and we spent a huge amount to have such a level of quality", and few weeks after you remove 20k.

IIRC on the video the wiring did seem a bit rough around the edges. Probably a more realistic asking price now as many aspects are very nice and if someone did want to turn it into the best of this model then it could be a good starting point.

Also FWIW the argument that high prices mean people will invest in restoring cars seems floored. It usually means you just have to pay even more money initially for the basket case / rest project, so ends up costing even more to do it.

I'm sure most people who carry out full resto's do it just to do it. And all credit to them. Once done, if it's driven or used it will just depreciate again over time as components wear or deteriorate. Even if it's not driven it will deteriorate just more slowly.

So being as this was restored in 2003 I'm sure the exhaust rubber that was pointed out won't be the only rubber component that needs attention.

Harsh? Remember this is a car hoping to retail at £30k. It should be very hard to find fault, sadly it’s all too easy?

Neil,
I don't think the guy is to far from the truth. It's wrong to promote poor quality restoration under the guise that they were like that from new.

If restored TVR were rebuilt with original factories standards, we wouldn't be here to enjoy our cars. Hopefully, all TVR have been "finished" by all buyers (new or used).

Does eBay say if it didn’t reach the reserve. I would have thought the reserve would have been a fair bit higher.

the advert would say, if the reserve wouldnt have been met.

9k for the other one looks low...but its exactly the price which this car is worth...if not already too expensive.... the sill at drivers door corner has a big paint chip. paintchip on sill, flat paint throughout bonnet, paint damaged on rear of doors (door openend against garage wall), safety-belt anchorage buckle wrapped with insulating tape, cracked surround of passenger (inner) door opener, badly painted drivers side front bumper, drivers side front pumper deformed, chassis cables fixing brackets of horns horns and some wring oversprayed with underbody coating, even the blue water hose to epansion tank is oversprayed, generally poor enginebay.

and if you lift the body i promise you a full chassis refurb necessary.....and than 9k start to get expensive.
