so again the advert might promise more than the car in reality stands for.

the seller might be honest in listing all the neg. points, but those points do not really boost any confidence to the car...as those points stand in complete contrary to the so called "restoration" of the car.

It states a full mechanical restoration and it looks to be exactly that. Paint and interior are described as good original?

To my inexperienced eyes, this seems a good example.

this one looks really promising....far better then the 30k one mentioned above....

if the chassis is good not much to critisize with that car.

as always: why no chassis pics...if the car is still nice and good underneath?

Very difficult to take pictures of Chassis where it matters without lifting the Body.

agree...but a skilled person can recognize the gerneral condition by viewing pictures from suspension and certain visible tubing of the chassis.

too many cars around with new paintwork and new interior, thousands spent by the owner in the last months and finally all based on a complete rotten basics. "the car has a fresh MOT" is often what you can here as "prove" of condition.

That's close to how I 'won' my eBay S1. Had a £3k paint job and new roof before being written off on way home from gaining a dodgy MoT. Found out later that it failed an Mot one day on corroded chassis and miracle occurred to pass the next. Put it this way, when trying to remove the outer seatbelt bolts, I managed to turn 6" of outrigger instead of the bolt being undone.

I don't think you need to be skilled to look at photos but skilled to make the photos look good.
Depends on asking price if you need to inspect in the flesh.
I bought a Lotus Elan +2 11 years ago on just photos but the price was only £3,000. I just sent a normal Cheque to buy it, no regrets.

it all depends on the price.

if a seller asks "premimum" money , than he needs to provide "premium" info. and there is no excuse for not providing it.
especially nowadays were people may not be able to travel (restrictions for c.19) or not willing to travel for the same reason.

If a seller is selling a premium car then in my experience he needs a premium buyer. A premium buyer is generally someone who knows what they want and is prepared to go and look. Far to many idiots today seem to spend their time wasting peoples time in my view.. No matter how good the ad and how many pictures you post people still ask for more.. The answer is simple.. Get of your arse and go look and if that is too much trouble then in reality you weren't really interested in the first place....Then again I am rarely desperate to sell !

Maybe its just coincidence but the last half dozen or so cars I have sold have never sold to an internet nobber.. They have always sold to a person who has seen a basic ad, Made a telephone call and then viewed the car.. Then again my view is that the cars I sell are things that people want, not fodder that I am desperate to get shot of!! I am always happy to spend time in person with people but dislike typing on my own dime!!

M series and older cars will fall into 2 categories, those with pervious chassis restoration and those without. The majority of those that have had the chassis done will have photographs to show the work prior to body back on.

The majority without chassis restoration will probably need it.

call me crazy....but i never viewed a car within the last 15y....i just bought by pictures....i might have been a pain in the *ss for sellers asking for pictures and even more pictures and even more details....we always agreed a sales price pre-collection and i never negotiated again when collecting & i never was disapointed from my purchases.

i would not even drive to my neiighbour village for things which could be easily clarified in advance by an email and pictures.

and i´m talking here of min 20cars for me or mates from the typical "average" condition up to top condition cars....obviously not nly TVR´s, but similar.

How do you assess excessive mechanical wear and tear from a photograph?

Depends on price,
if it's going very cheap just take it you will need to replace all the running Gear.

good question...i have a kind of "feeling" when viewing such pictures...and my feeling never let me down.
may its my 35y expirience, even i´m not comming from the automotive corner...its my hobby.

i have mates asking me about adverts when buying their daily driver.....i make them a list what concerns me viewing the advert (even cars which i do not have ANY expirience)...i tell them: dont view the car, its a waste of time.
soem believe me, some not: they travel 100, 200 or even 400miles to view the car...and when they arrive they call me completely disapointed and say "your were right...we cannot believe how you manged to give such a spot-on evaluation of the car from distance"

the same way vice versa: if i say: this car is worth buying, you can buy it blind...its a waste of time traveling there...the same: some cannot believe, they travel hundreds of miles and finally phone me: "you were spot-on with your evaluation, the car is as you reported"

Agree with this. I’ve just sold a classic mustang, it was advertised for two weeks, I was inundated with offers daily, at least three offers a day, one day I had seven. Provided all the info, pictures, documents etc that were requested. The guy who bought it was the one who rang up, had a conversation, then showed up had further conversations, agreed a price and drove it away.
