New Carb on 3000M
Discussion
Well lads I fitted my new JWD (Modified 38dgms) carb at the weekend and the difference is shattering! Engine revs to well over 6000 if you want but no need cos the improved torque I've now got at 5700 is unbelievable! The car really pulls better on gear change and is loads more responsive to the throttle, can't wait to get the accelerometer on to check out the new times......
Well done, you'll find that if you improve the exhaust manifolding it will go even better
Watch out though on the revving, Essex engines do not like it unless heavily top end modified. After a sprint at Goodwood, I had pulled at least two rocker studs out of the head! (6000rpm all the way down the back straight, several times, well it was a Sprint and I wasn't going to let Ian Bannister is his trick Vixen get a better time than me!)
I'd keep it to 5700rpm and less, enjoy it though.

davidy,
reason I bought the car was because work around the engine had already been done, each manifold is 1 3/4" pipe to 2" all in stainless, nice even bends both sides then 2" all the way to the back. The exhaust note sounds gorgeous, as you can remember! I reckon I can put another 50 bhp into this system without any probs....seriously thinking about the 3.4 conversion now!
I can't get over how crisp acceleration is with this new carb.
Cheers,
Glyn.
edited to add I'm thinking about changing my name to "jwig" for obvious reasons

Glad you got a sorted exhaust, what about air filters, the standard and even the off-the shelf K&N's are quite restrictive and other filter designs don't work too well as the bonnet comes down on top of them. I had a custom K&N made by a man at K&N, I supplied top and bottom plates, he built the filter, with special deep vanes, for extra air surface. His calculations said it would breathe to 235bhp.
If your car is going well, I personally wouldn't bother going for the 3.4 until something breaks. I'd go to a good trackday and get some real 'one to one' driver tutition, you'll be surprised how much quicker you'll then be able to go. (I'd also get the instructor to drive you car and ask him for real opinions). The big advantage of this is that it is transferrable to any car you drive!!!
In my opinion the next area to change would be the wheels/tyres and once you've got the power sorted and the driver is cooking (going beyond his elastic limit!), you'll just run out of grip!
