Hi,

Little update. Working in the engine and gearbox. Gearbox is Ford 2000E, 3 rail. Not what I was expecting but a fine gearbox. Has the long first gear 2.97:1, also good. I stripped it, needs at least £200 in parts so looking for rebuilt second hand.

Engine was a right mongrel, a total mix up of bits. 681 block, later crank and con rods. Pistons were later chambered design with valve cut out, plus head was semi chambered. Hence 7:1 compression ratio. In addition had the non GT cam. Must have been 60hp maximum.

Updated with 1300 pistons to give 10:1 compression ratio, flat head, Kent 234 cam. Managed to find a full race head at a very good price. Valves just fit, see image.

Now, should really use twin carbs to maximise power. Looking for a pair if anyone got spares!

Nic

Ps, view from below of head assembled to block, valves very snug.

Engine and box were lifted direct from Mk2 Cortina GT/1600E which had the 2000E gearbox. So it’s the right one for the car. They are sought after and you will be lucky to pickup a properly rebuilt one on the cheap. Likewise, proper rebuild of yours will likely not give you much change from a grand. BGH are super knowledgable on those boxes.

Full race head nice but those valve sizes really need to be in a bigger bore cylinder because you will get valve shroud from the cylinder walls which will screw up the cylinder fill and the combustion. The big 41.3mm inlet valves only really work efficiently on bores of 83.5mm and upwards.

Twin 40’s you will need a short inlet manifold to fit. There are loads of FB groups for Webers and Xflows which are a good place to find both carbs and manifolds.

Yes with the shrouding - Nic can you get a quick rebore? You’ll probably then be up to 34-36 chokes with that. Nice.

Is this because the S2 is hydraulic clutch and it interferes with the air filters? On my S3 which is cable clutch, I ran twin 40's with an extra long 110mm inlet manifold and still had room for 65mm deep K&N filters.

Nic,

I had my 2000E gearbox fully rebuilt last year by Geartech (Midlands) Ltd. They have previously rebuilt my diffs and are a good specialist gearbox and diff outfit. The full rebuild including new gaskets, seals, bearings, new genuine Ford 2nd gear (very hard to get hold of), 1/2 syncros & 1/2 inner hub. All in was £510 including VAT.

Nic there’s Paul at First Motion in Baldock. He’s good on Ford stuff and only 20 mins away.

Hi. Going for +0.090 pistons. I am not convinced shielding is going to be made different by such a small change in clearance, but, I needed to go above 0.060 to clean up the bores anyway.

I was doing an ‘as original’ rebuild, but coincidences pushed me elsewhere. See below latest purchase.

Additionally, I have original low back seats, they need repair as opposed to recovering. So, some rips on the back and seams want sorting, but not a write off. If anyone has a pair of high backs, I would consider a trade.

Thanks

Morning Nic.

I think you'll be pleased that you went with a pair of DCOE's. Very pretty and should bring the engine alive. They also sound fantastic on full throttle.

Sorry can't help you with your seat swap. FWIW although there were original 'low back' & 'high back' seats, the terms are fairly mis-leading. Mine are the 'high back' ones but they are not very high. In fact the perfect height to give you whip lash in an accident as the top of the seat is at the same level to the bottom of your neck. They do look pretty though. The low backs must have been super low.

Wow, they are super low. They look similar to ones I've seen in Granturas.

They are pretty and I bet would look really nice if they're fitted.

Good luck with finding a swap though.

I think so to as well, I had a few cars Abarths and the sorts with those sort carbs, they sounded addictive, lovely and direct, long long time ago when I owned such cars though, even now with not heavy cars ans 400++ hp I still remember those days with cars and such set-up very well, makes the car feel sporty :-)

Those seats are the same as my S2 Vixen, they too need repair and a retrim so I am replacing with a pair of aftermarket seats for the price of repairing one original seat, you are going the right way too on your engine,+90 bore and a pair of 40s is the same as mine too. I have a type 9 5 speed box with cable operated clutch the same as later Vixens and 1600Ms

Audi Mk1 TT seats and MX5 seats fit well apparently.
