Last time I replaced mine I used a bicycle brake cable from the local bike shop. I retained the outer cable sleeve and, four years on, it still works fine.

Had a universal fit motorbike rear brake cable on my 1600M for over ten years,still ok on twin webers.

I replaced my cable with one from a ford fiesta xr2 mk2 approx 1987 as the carb end has the square plastic clip, you will need to cut to length @ pedal end.

A few years ago I broke one, took the ends to the Ford parts man and matched it to a MK4 Cortina which had the right length and fittings.
