I currently race a Grantura MkIIa, with a 1588cc MGA (B series) engine. In order to liberate a little extra mid-range torque I'd like to fit an HRG Derrington alloy cross-flow head over the winter. Does anyone know of the wherabouts of a usable example?
I've tried Brown and Gammons (they had some new castings made a while ago), but they've sold out.

Try britishclassiccarspares.com

They sell new ones, and maybe have used as well.

Best of luck!

The current crossflow head is the "MSX" and is distributed by Pierce Manifolds (www.piercemanifolds.com) of the USA. HRG Derringtons are, as far as I know, no longer made.
The US price is very attractive, at under $800 for an assembled head. Don't forget that a crossflow on the B Series engine really should have a different cam. There is a bloke at Pierce who knows all about this and is very helpful, but I don't remember his name. He can select the correct cam for your use. They do sell cams as well.

Good luck!

Hi JFjong,

Many thanks for the info.
The 800 bucks price-tag certainly seems more attractive than the 900 quid + vat asked by britishclassicsportscars for what seems like the same item.
Have you got one of these heads? If so what was the service like from Pierce Manifolds?

All the best with the racing (where and when will you be out playing?)

Yes, the price is unbeatable. Also, don't forget that you can get a bare head even cheaper, if you want to fit your own valvecomponents (Rimflo s/s or even titan$$$, dual springs, titan retainers etc.) and build the ultimate head!

I personally don't have this head - yet - because I have a Peter Burgess engine which I don't want to modify to much, of course. However, some of my fellow racers in NZ use them with excellent results. Pierce service is friendly & fast.

My racing takes place in Asia and NZ. Pictures can be seen at www.tassenet.net/images/racing/

We are furtunate enough to race at the world-famous Sepang F1 circuit, KL, Malaysia, this year. Couldn't be better!

Regards,
JF

There is one of those HRG heads on Ebay right now. It is still fastened to an MGA motor, but that's OK.

Can you let me know how you got on with your MSX cylinder head. I have a Mk1 Grantura and want to give it the same treatment. Many thanks, Robert Adams
