3000 - Timing marks

What is the reference point for setting the timing ? I only see a notch which I assume is TDC but nothing showing any degrees before TDC.

Also, what is the recommended advance ? I have been given figures of anything between 8 degrees to 14 degrees before TDC.

The engine runs on LRP and/or treated unleaded with a 38DGAS carb and Newtronic elect ign.

The pointer degrees are as below
8 12
6 ^ 10 ^ 14

The 8 and 12 are meant to be above the pointed bits.

My 3000S and Scimitar are both set at 10 degrees.
