The trick is to not go very fast in previous races at Silverstone, as your handicap is based on your previous fastest lap times.

Starting position is pretty irrelevant unless you're going for the overall scratch win, which we won't be doing (unless we all upgrade to Radical SR3s or Tuscan race cars before October! )

You tend to do well if you have reliable, consistent cars/drivers, and good team work in the pits, plus a dedicated person on the pitwall to dictate who goes out and comes in when.

You can easily lose several laps if you don't always have a driver ready to go out as soon as the previous car has left (e.g., I had an alternator problem in one of my stints, so pulled off after something like 2 laps), and even 3 or 4 laps can make a big difference to your overall position.

Bugger - sio I have to 'take a dive' in August then

Yes but not whilst your out on the track

you have to come in to refuel, so you stay out as long as your fuel/tyres/arms hold up and then hand over to the next car, refuel and wait for you next turn.

as Ed says to go for a scratch with you need 4 quick drivers in radical and each do 1 1.5 hour stint. as you minimise time lost in the pits.

With 6 varied cars doing 2 30 min stints were going to loose a fair few laps in the pits, but then that format is the most fun and plenty of the other teams are in the same boat.

Ahh their on to that one. They take you handicap time from a previous results sheet. i.e my last and quickest lap time happens to be at the birkett last year so i'll give them a results sheet for then showing the time.

i.e i dont think they'll belive your fastest time in the tuscan around silverstone national is a 1m 30 sec

What do they do if you haven't done the National Circuit before in said vehicle?

Mind you, you're right. If I can do the National circuit in a 1.07.5 in a Caterham in my second ever race weekend, I guess I ought to be able to do it a bit quicker in the Tuscan these days

Isn't the National circuit a bit small for these shenanigans?

you'd have though so with 41 teams but it seems to work ok. i'll admit its about my least favourite circuit but the event is fun.

Back again - looks like this is taking off.

In order to answer the questions that everybody else has posted earlier:-

Ginetta - 25l fuel tank (22l until no power out of the corners). - approx 30 min stints, so it looks like I fit in with everybody else - even if not the ideal setup.

I too only have race times for the international circuit - so that'll be about two minutes for the national then .

This is starting to look good, with a nice variety of vehicles.

It looks like I will not be driving then I have done so many laps of the national cicuit I could do it in my sleep, but I am very willing to provide pit lane support, pit wall info, team co-ordination and I will get my tools ready.

If this is a success then maybe we could look at other ideas in the future.

My entry form will be completed this weekend

There go my plans to take this year off racing!

We'll need someone experienced to act as team manager though - ideally someone who's run a team at the Birkett (or other long distance event) in the past. Any suggestions?

I have run cars in 750mc events (amongst others) before but not in long distance racing. I am more that happy to volunteer for the role as team manager if no-one else more suitable comes forward.

I'd love to join in if they allow single seaters (Formula Ford), but I can't find the regs anywhere to find out. Normally Formula Ford races take about 20 mins, but the tanks only half full then so maybe it could manage 40 mins on a full tank.

I would think it unlikely that they allow single seaters.

Nope - no single seaters in this one. They did use to run two races, but haven't run a single seater one for a few years now.

Sounds like a great excuse to get together on a cold day for some racing fun. I'll be there to cheer on.

Ted can we get this into the calendar if it all goes according to plan?

Make that cold and wet!

Actually - the last couple of years have been surprisingly warm for the end of October, so fingers crossed it will be the same this year!

I'd love to help as well: timing, spotting, checking tyre pressures or just keeping the pies/ tea warm etc.

No experiecne of racing, but been hanging around race circuits for 12+ years so have lots of enthusiasm!!!
