I just read on twitter that Toyota will be testing an S2000 Yaris in 2013, further hinting that they may return to WRC.
Things are looking up for WRC at the moment, VW are here now and Red Bull, maybe we'll get Subaru back as well!

From Autosport:

Toyota will return to rallying with an entry-level Yaris which will make its first public outing in Rally Germany later this month.

The TMG Yaris R1A has been developed as an entry-level machine priced at approximately €22,500.

Toyota said the car will be able to compete in the World Rally Championship under the R1A regulations once it is homologated by the FIA before the end of the year.

The Yaris will run as 'zero car' duriung Rallye Deutschland and it will be driven by Isolde Holderied.

they are quite similar stages. all based around the Sennybridge Military ranges so getting about to see different stages is very possible. with a good amount of forward planning!

Dixies Corner is usually a speccy fave as you get a fair view of the car on approach and further on.
early/overnight arrival will be recomended for any stages on the Ranges!

Yep you want to be on on the ranges early else it can be a long old walk to the stages!

edit: just looked at the stage times and the 7.18 start on Sunday takes the fooking piss! With that and the cost of tickets its no wonder many people are put off the event!!

Me and my mate used to drive into mid-Wales the night before and stay at his Aunt's amazing farm house up in the hills. The following morning we would be up at 4am ready to set off for the first stage after his fantastic Aunt had cooked us a lovely Welsh breakfast to get us through the day.

We would then spend the day hooning around the back roads of Wales, trying to keep ahead of the rally to get into the stages, with only a map to guide us (pre-satnav). Eventually we would get back to Manchester that night completely knackered. Loved those days.

Yes, get there early. I know the car parks normally open at 18:00, but I've got there 40-50 minutes before and got in - and park close to the Route60 hairpin.
I don't have a problem with the early starts - though I'm used to the old Skool Rallying. But I agree about the ticket prices, I don't know how they justify the prices. If it was £45 for a complete Rally pass then that would be good value. WRC/ RallyGB is now a minority sport...they're not doing enough to grab the interest of Joe Public.

Spare a thought for us marshals. we have to be signed on up to 3hrs before the 1st car is due (1st car is considered as the 000 car on some ocasions, and they generally go through about an hourish before the 1st competetive car!)

luckily, as i mainly do starts and finishes now i get the liberty of rocking up towards the end of sign on to avoid all the traffic/hustle n bustle of a couple of hundred marshals doing the same!

i'm thankfull i have been asked to do the Celtic Mannor stage this year. sign on will be about 3pm instead of 3am for a change! nice lie in that morning! biggrin

We're marshalling Celtic Manor this year too. Looking forward to a nice relaxed start time and reasonable finish. We've even booked a room in the hotel for the night, so we don't have any distance to go after we're done.

The only downer is that we're marshalling Port Talbot the following morning, so we will need a right early start to get down there.

Looking forward to it tho.

i think i am down to do Finish on the manor stage.

no fancy hotel for me though! wink
i only live about 30mins away in good traffic, so its a quick race home. then i have 2 choices. stay at home and get up early. or get home, freshen up, re supply then head over to Walters Arena to stay there overnight, though i'm doign Start Line there so sleep will be limited with marshals arriving early.

i'll see how i feel after the manor stage, and what hte rest of my group are doing smile

You sir are a hero. And I guess you don't get paid for keeping everyone safe?

hero, is a bit of an exageration, but thanks for the sentiment wink

nope, marshaling is all volunteer work. we get 'goody bags' which last year, with the exeption of the mandatory tabbard, was a rally branded record bag, a programme and a marshals pass and if theres enough given to the stage commander who makes up the marshal packs, you may be lucky with a pen, a whistle and a pin badge.

for some local events you get nothing more than a map of the stage your on, others can be more generous and supply pens/keychains and the like.
some even go a step further and supply a snack for marshals. usually a roll, mars bar and a bottle of water.

tbh i'm not in it for the goodies. tho my nephew loves them wink he couldnt wait to go to school last year with his new bag, especially as they were marshal only issued!

the only people getting paid on these events, or so i'm told, are medical crew and recovery teams.
tho judging by the shambles that the medical crew i had dealings with recently were, makes me think they shouldnt be, borderline negligent and lazy is all i have to say for that particular team! rolleyes

its good that he's recovered from his injury. but i dont rate him tbh. though it will be nice to have a British Driver in a top level car in the GB round.

He is very constant though? And usually gets the car to the end in the top 10.

Eta. In his last 40 rallies he has finished in the top 10 31 times. His only 3 retirements were probably cos his car broke knowing the Ford. The last 3 years he has been 7th in the drivers championship.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Wilson

I wonder whether he would have been more successful in the days before they turned rallies into sprint events?

That's true. But he's not got what it takes to break the top 5, unless accidents force the regulars out, and he's mixing with S2000 drivers that he should be comfortably beating. I don't think he's going to set the stages alight on his return, and unless he gets entry to other rallies before GB he could find himself being made a fool of.
Testing round M-Sport will be good for him to get a feel after the injury. But here's no real competition to doing laps of your own stage. Which he should know like the back of his hand.

Looks like there could be at least one potentially competitive Mini in Wales.

Autosport said:

Chris Atkinson to return to World Rally Championship in Germany with Mini Portugal squad

Chris Atkinson will drive Team Portugal's Mini in the remaining rounds of the World Rally Championship replacing Armindo Araujo.

The former Subaru works driver has started two events this year: Rally Mexico with the Monster Ford team and Rally Finland in a Citroen DS3.

Araujo was expected to stay with the team all season, but the squad said it wanted to give him a break to "regain his focus".

"After our Rally Finland debrief and further conversations with Armindo since returning home, we decided that it was better for him to take a break, relax and regain his focus on the sport and how he approaches it," said team manager Bruno di Pianto.

"The decision was not taken lightly and was made on purely sporting grounds. It was not a personal decision and everyone in the team wishes Armindo all the best for the future."

Atkinson becomes the team's number one driver and he will be at the wheel of the factory-supported Mini WRC starting in Germany next weekend.

"Mini has provided me with an awesome opportunity to return to the world championship and I'm stoked to be back as a lead driver for a great manufacturer and for the remainder of the 2012 season," said the Australian, who is yet to drive the car.

"I love the Tarmac so it's great to know that three of the remaining five events are on the sealed surface, and I hope to take full advantage of my past experiences of the remaining rallies this year."

Considering going, but want to hit (a) stage(s) that are run through twice. Are the viewing points limited to designated areas or is there free reign to go further along the route if you are being sensible?

Thats quite a smack in the teeth for Sordo & Meeke!

All stages, with the exception the celtic manor special, are run twice. Visit http://www.walesrallygb.com/spectators/overallmap....

With enough forward planning you can get to different parts of the stage not designated speccy areas.

For best bang for buck i’d buy tickets for the Stages on Saturday. Its all run on the Sennybridge Military Ranges. And like i said, enough planning will allow you to get to different points to see the cars.

try and get the tickets in advance too, as its £25 per person on the day! yikes

Has Atkinson managed to get some decent sponsorship?

And what exactly was wrong with Armindo Araujo approach? Or is it just political spin for you're ste mate?
