I have the sky sports channels but no HD so I need to upgrade to HD to get the new formula 1 channel?
Nope, you'll get an SD F1 channel included in what you have provided you have Sky Sports 1 & 2.http://www.sky.com/helpcentre/tv/finding-and-recor...

To the people saying it's 30 odd GBP per race; are you seriously suggesting you wouldn't use Sky for any single other sport? Golf, tennis, football, cricket to name a few which are all excellently covered on Sky sports.
I love F1 as much as the next person but I also have interests outside of F1 like other sports!

Not necessarilly. I like football so, in theory, could make use of the live TV coverage. But I also have ESPN at the moment and never look at their live football matches. It's a matter of how I chose to use my time.I love F1 as much as the next person but I also have interests outside of F1 like other sports!
So, even though I do like a lot of sports, I still wouldn't be making the most of the sports package that I had paid for. I remember a term I learned when studying economics known as Marginal Utility. In the case of Sky Sports the marginal utility of having all these sports live would not entice me to pay out what I consider to be a considerable sum which I would prefer to spend elsewhere (or even save).

Rather, would they only watch F1 via their TV? Is the thing going to gather dust between races I love F1 as much as the next person but I also have interests outside of F1 like other sports!
The F1 deal hasn't changed that, we could afford it, we'd almost certainly watch some other stuff which wouldn't otherwise be available but on the whole, even with the loss of 10 live F1 races we're happy enough with our current provider (Freeview +ESPN + VoD through BT Vision, which, for the moment at least we get somewhat cheaper than the advertised rates due to having been early adopters and being willing to play hard to get come renewal time) that there are simply other things we'd rather spend the money on...

Yes! I wont watch any other sport than F1, I have no interest in golf, tennis, football cricket etc which is just as well as for the £30 a race version of Sky F1 you wouldnt get the sports channels anyway!I love F1 as much as the next person but I also have interests outside of F1 like other sports!
In reality as a family we watch very little TV, I watch Top Gear, F1 and the news, my wife might watch a bit more stull like Don't Tell the Bride, but then she'll go to sleep anyway! My daughter might watch kids TV but she'd much prefer to be outside playing with the neighbours kids, cycling, etc.
I have looked at Sky in the past but just cannot justify the cost on the amount I'll watch it. I'd prefer to spend that money on something else or save it towards a trip to a live race!

Yes. I don't watch any of those dull sports.I love F1 as much as the next person but I also have interests outside of F1 like other sports!
I love F1 but am struggling to justify the cost of upgrading my Sky sub just for it. I'm going to see how the BBC coverage shapes up first.

The BBC have announced that Jamie Alguersuari will be joining the 5 Live team as a summariser - should be a worthy addition:http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/17268711
Bloody hell, looks like I'm going to be in China for the opening race of the season, damn.
Does anyone know how to watch the race in Shanghai? I've got Sky Go, but it doesn't work (officially) outside of the UK. Any idea how to make the computer thinbk it is in the UK? Or does anyone know if it will be broadcast in China on any channel that a standard hotel tv setup will have?

Well, I've just bitten the bullet and will be dropping my Virgin Media TV package (still keeping the broadband and phone though) and have just signed up to Sky+HD. Unfortunately the installation won't take place until 16th March, which is cutting it fine for qualifying if the installation slips a bit (I'm not too fussed about missing practice) as my landlord has requested that he is around so that he can ensure the installation is tidy.
I couldn't fault Virgin Media's Retentions Team though. They tried everything they could to keep me on the TV package, but everything they came back with was still north of £75 pounds for the whole package, whereas dropping the TV and taking Sky keeps my bill at roughly the same level that it would have been come April - there are literally pence in it.
Previously I wasn't that bothered about the upcoming season. Now I can't wait for the season to start!

Would you not have saved money by dropping the VM phone and broadband too?I couldn't fault Virgin Media's Retentions Team though. Aside from that, I cannot wait for their version of the F1 classics to start, it's under a different name and is going to take a while to convert the footage from film to something that is able to be broadcast via todays technology but I'm almost more excited about seeing Jim Clark racing that the 2012 season.Hopefully they'll also have Zonta's on board footage from F1Digital when he was passed by Schumacher and Mika in Belguim too.

www.rtl.de will almost certainly work; there are plenty of internet streams around if you look for them, but they tend to pop up on the day. I expect it'll be available - depends what channels your hotel has, but it's quite likely they'll take Australian TV since the satellite would be in about the right place. Phone lines at my flat are pretty much held together with string. The thought of going back to 1mbps when I've been used to 20mbps just didn't appeal.
Then there is the fact that VM are doubling our speeds, making the speeds we are going to get untouchable by Sky or BT via phone lines.I think all those who have incessantly banged on about how F1's move to Sky will be disastrous, are about to look rather silly.
It's already plain to see, that Sky are about to give us F1 fans greater access to the sport than at any other time since F1 has been broadcast.
I'll miss Jake Humphrey and David Coulthard's commentary, but this has been offset by losing the insufferable Eddie Jordan.
It will be interesting to directly compare BBC and Sky's coverage of F1.
