In fact, I think these people were even luckier.
It would be a very different story if these people were stood a few feet further along.

And that kids, is why you should never stand on the outside of a corner.
The comments to that video are priceless. Take this one, for instance:It would be a very different story if these people were stood a few feet further along.

I'm an enthusiast, been to this race and stood on that corner every year since 2002. We always stand before the apex for this very reason and that saved my life yesterday. I will be moving 50ft up the track next year. That was way too close for comfort. Only missed me by 10 ft, They usually go off 100ft past where we stand. Its the people in turn 4 who stand in front all the dead trees who freak me out.

Here's another view from the outside of the bend:It would be a very different story if these people were stood a few feet further along.

That was bloody close.
Very lucky indeed.
What I think saved those guys were the fact that the crash happened on a hill. After going off the road the initial impact was not that great as they followed the line of the slope. As the car rolled more energy would have been dissipated until the car stopped. I know it’s a strange comparison but it’s just like when I take on a large jump when snowboarding. I make sure the landing area is suitably sloped, that way even if I am dropping in from 40ft up the actual landing is very gentle and my knees are not destroyed. What kills you is coming to a halt too fast
