RE: Loeb can't help but win
Monday 21st January 2013
Sebastien Loeb has taken victory the opening round of the WRC season. Despite embarking on a semi-retirement year of only four events, Loeb clearly shows no sign of slowing down, and won the Monte Carlo Rally after leading from the second stage.
Loeb can't help but win
Nine-time champion takes victory as the Monte Carlo Rally draws to a premature close
Loeb’s win came in dramatic circumstances as the rally was curtailed prematurely by organisers. The decision was taken to cancel the final two stages on safety grounds, after huge numbers of spectators fled the worsening weather, causing gridlock on the narrow roads around the stages. That wasn’t the only drama of the event’s final night, though. The treacherous conditions caused by the snow and ice caused three of the top seven drivers to fall off the stage, including Jari-Matti Latvala, whose VW Polo had an oversteery moment on the Col de Turini that resulted in a brief but violent encounter with a cliff face.
It was Loeb who came through to win in style, though, taking the win by 1min 39.9sec from second-place man Sebastien Ogier, and despite supposedly winding down his career, he was understandably pleased with the result in these conditions. “I’m going to really savour this win, especially as in all likelihood it’ll be my last one here,” he said. “I think this was the first Monte-Carlo that I have competed in where I haven’t used slick tyres at all. You couldn’t go any faster than 30kph on the straight section, otherwise you lose the car completely and you go off!”
It’s highly unlikely that Loeb will be in the running for this year’s title, but he will return to contest three more rallies, which are set to include Sweden and France. Meanwhile, the rest of the pack will look to capitalise on his absence – though who will take the title is anyone’s guess.
Discussion
This is cockblocking at its best. As much as I admire Loeb, his suave style. Roll up to practice in a Lamborghini, shag the PR girls then win the race. He has to let the others get some action.
While the other drivers are busy training and practicing the routes, trying to get the setup sorted for the next race. Pleading with sponsors to stay with them.

If he can do it he should, if I was good enough to not practice and win then I'd do it. While the other drivers are busy training and practicing the routes, trying to get the setup sorted for the next race. Pleading with sponsors to stay with them.

Genius!
The guy is a true legend & must be the best ever. Wouldn't suprise me if he won the 2013 World Championship regardless of only doing 4 events this year.
I reckon he will be back for more than 4 events as the hunger to win is obviously still there.
It must be fairly disheartening for everyone else seeing Mr Loeb disappearing off into the distance. Again......

Loeb did some practise/training too: While the other drivers are busy training and practicing the routes, trying to get the setup sorted for the next race. Pleading with sponsors to stay with them.

To be honest, the way that car launches off the corners with Loeb driving, it's surprising he's semi-retired at all.

No coverage on Motors, Eurosport etc. But aparently there is some coverage on the Welsh channel S4C, but searching on Sky, I've not found any mention of it yet.
Real shame the TV deals all fell through. Due to Loed "leaving" I think there's more interesting in WRC now than there has been for many years.
Edited my shocking spelling

I have to say, I was completely unaware of this. I took Loeb on face value from his short and teethpulling-esque interviews mid rally. While the other drivers are busy training and practicing the routes, trying to get the setup sorted for the next race. Pleading with sponsors to stay with them.

That one image has literally polar changed my opinion of the man
I'm no Loeb fan at all but you've got to give him his do's. If nobody else is good enough to beat him why should he give up or even semi-retire.
I say it's tough titties on the others if they haven't got the machine or talent to beat him, why should they be given a chance. I thought this was a competition.
He should keep going till the bitter end. Do a Schumacker, milk it till he starts losing and then bow out gracefully.
Nowt wrong with that!

I think he will be in for a shout at the title, by far the best racing driver out there and a very good chance of 4 wins!! the rest of the field taking points of each other and I wonder if 3/4 way through the season if he may change his mind about doing a couple more races and go for the title.
Will have to wait and see.

This would be interesting to see if it happened. Suppose it would depend on his WTCC testing/Sportscar racing calender through the year. Will have to wait and see.

A damn shame the FIA wouldn't grant him a Super Licence, thus blocking his switch to F1
Presumably there is nothing stopping him doing a season in British F3 and gaining his licence the old fashioned way, I would hazard a guess that if he really wanted to drive in F1 he would have created an opportunity for himself by now, I can't imagine funding would be an issue.Gassing Station | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
