I have been in an argument with many people over which is the best motorsport. To me, Formula 1 is too predictable, BTCC is good, but is essentially a load of cars going round in a circle.

For me, the best motorsport is drag racing. There are so many different classes and theres something for everyone. And come on, lets face it, is there anything more exciting than watching a 7,000bhp dragster doing the 1/4 mile in 4 seconds at up to 300mph? I think not!

What are your views? What flicks your switch?

To watch I think rally, so many variables and a much higher level of risk than anything else.

I really enjoy the BTCC. Lots of overtaking and argy-bargy. Kind of a Villeneuve-Arnoux scrap every time!

GT racing, British or European.

Lots of different cars, not just a single marque, usually derived from road going cars so there is some link there if you have one, and they all look rock 'ard.

Some of the one-make stuff has the best racing. There was a CRX class a while back and that was great to watch.

Telly, it's got to be MotoGP and the WSB

But IRL really anywhere where you can sit down for an afternoon, have a few reasonably priced beers, talk to the competitors etc

I have to agree with SimonRockman. Back in the day series like the Honda CRX's, Renault 5 Turbos and Formula ford 1600 were guarnteed entertainment. Not because of the shunts or closeness of the cars but because in each of those series there were at least 6 to 10 drivers all capable of winning races and all desperately wanting to. The rest of the field had to work extra hard to keep up. Therefore the racing was always hard, close and clever with grids running into reserves at every meeting. These days only Moto GP, WSB and BSB run close to the same standards and opportunity.

TVR Tuscan Challenge is always worth it.
The fastest single make racing series in the world I'm told. Some really close racing and competitors that mostly get on OK with each other (Baldrick) and are always happy to chat.

The GT / Formula 3 show that does the rounds is great.

Watching Piquet Jnr strutting his stuff round Oulton this year was something else. Theres quite decent racing in this F3 single seat class.

Historics are great to watch too.

At risk of sounding like a chav...................

I really enjoy short oval racing - stock cars super stocks etc.

Reasons:

Up close
Not too "corporate"
Whole race visible.
Incredible car control (OK, so they only turn right!)
Fantastic in the dark.

Banger racing is good for a laugh - and yes I know they destroy some pretty good classics, but it`s their money that buys them.

If you`ve never been, try the Nov 5th meeting at a Spedeworth track near you. Good Fun & fantastic fireworks.

well some nights here we get the US Indy car series, and from the way everyone goes on you'd think it was racing round in circles. But to my suprise its actually like a cut price version of F1, excpet they still use turbos and overtake buttons, there is LOADS of overtaking and lots of things like yellow flags and pitstops to throw in some extra excitement. They even do a few doughnuts at the end of the race

This is on the next night after F1 over here and generally I find its usually more interesting to watch, even the comentators aren't too bad, sometimes they don't say anything for ages, once it went a whole lap with onbaord camera and they didn't even interrupt once! fantastic.

They actually seem interested in changing the rules to make the race interesting in indycar so I'm slowly becoming a convert.

Rallies used to be interesting, but the last few years just seem to be very dull to me, bring back group B, or at least the homologated cars, even if is just so that us mortals can get our hands on one.
Seeing silouettes in the shape of some shopping trolleys doesnt do much for me, if they are going to make one off rally cars make 'em look decent.
Group B cars wouldn't win any beauty pageant but at least they looked like they mean business!

Drag racing = boring, seeing a million hp drag car do the 1/4 mile in 4 seconds might be impressive the first couple of times but then its the same, the only reason to keep watching after that is to see in the car will blow up or crash.

Which brings me to another point, safety, all these safety regulations are a bit boring, fair enough if people want to be safe let them drive a volvo, but if your an F1 driver earning squillions for leading a procession, it doesnt seem that fair, you need to be doing something a bit more dangerous to really earn your money you leeches. Its the element of danger which is what attracts most people to motorsport, the thrill of pushing man and machine to their limits and spectacular failure if they push too far.

so the ideal race car would have a big rear mounted engine with a turbo that had massive lag, crappy tyres, brakes that only worked sometimes, a nitrous injection system good for 30 seconds, no aero dynamic aids, machine guns, ability to deploy one oil slick behind the car, and a body strong enough to withstand multiple hits (which are encouraged).

now that would be interesting.

I'd go with rallying but that's me personally.

I deffo reckon its the best to spectate as well.

With circuit racing you turn up, get you seat, or spot on the bank and park up for the day.
A day spent spectating a rally is an ADVENTURE!!
You've got to plan you day out, leave early in the morning, naivgate your way to the stage, find your own personal spot along the stage. Watch the cars go whizzing past and get pelted with stones and choked with dust.
Then repeat.

You can get so much closer, crazy close if your an Italian or Spaniard.
I love getting out there and finding a spot where no one else is, so its your OWN personal experience.
That said, its getting harder to do with the marshalls herding you into "Spectator Areas" like sheep.
Bad form!
