RX7 your quite right. Except where you're wrong.
I HAVE looked, I don't enjoy what I see, and think F1 and WRC are anodyne. I'm afraid I'm one of the statistics that presses the button to switch channel when they come on.
It's a sad state of affairs that I prefer Moto GP to F1 (I'm not and never have been a biker) but at least the racing is close and varied. Oh and they.... What's the word?.......that's it!....,,. OVERTAKE!
I have never really been a religious F1 fan either, always bikes, but really, hardly much overtaking in that much the last few years, well certainly up the sharp end except for the one pass to get to the front (motogp).I HAVE looked, I don't enjoy what I see, and think F1 and WRC are anodyne. Each to their own of course, but i enjoyed groupB as much as the mcrae, sainz, burns, grundholme (to name a few) days. It has got a little turgid over recent years but would be more inclined to watch if there was regular and decent coverage
Back to the subject, I agree that the best era in rallying was when McRae, Sainz, Burns etc were out there, it was for me too. But then for me that could be as much to do with the fact that it was a golden era for British rallying and there was a chance of a Brit winning, as it was about the cars being more like something you could buy or might actually want to buy.
I bet there's a French version of Pistonheads where there's a forum with them talking about this being the best period for rallying? And no wonder!
It's disappointing to read some of the negative comments about rallying on here. Perhaps the lack of coverage leading to it's decline in popularity in the UK has left people bitter. Having moved to Sweden last year I was fortunate enough to go to the rally last weekend and it was brilliant. A proper day out for all the family. In my eyes it is still one of the purest forms of motorsport and the commitment those guys put in is second to none.
We were stood on frozen lake at a random corner with a crown of around 200 spectators from all over Europe. People were drinking, having fires and bbqs on the ice and generally having a good time. The highlight of the morning was watching the classic rally cars come though after the main event. By that point the crowd was getting boystrous and the cheers that went up when the Audi Quattro came through, shooting 5ft flames as it went, could match those at any sporting event I've been to.
I'll be honest, the classic cars were so much more entertaining to watch than the WRC. The variety of looks, sounds, driving styles and complete sidewaysness made them brilliant to watch. The day was finished off when the last of the Porsche 911 support cars ended up in the ditch in front of us, and 30 pissed Norwegians stumbled to the rescue.
Sorry to hear that there is no coverage in the UK at all. Here in Sweden we had live TV and radio coverage the whole weekend. I'm not trying to rub it in, I'm just wondering why it's viable here and not in the UK, especially considering the number of channels and the potential audience. Anyway here are some pics from the day.
Seb Loeb
Ogier nearly wiping out the TV crew that helicoptered in 5 minutes previously
Swedish sense of humour...
One of the Audi Quattros...what a noise!
Glad Petter wasn't in WRC...you could actually walk up to the guy and say hello.

Well we were there too again this year, and yes we were on that stage on the lake too, we even got to drive our hire car across the lake.We were stood on frozen lake at a random corner with a crown of around 200 spectators from all over Europe. I agree that the new Volkswagens look very cool, and it was good to see their car winning too.
Sadly the whole event was a shadow of its former self, and despite the historic cars, only a few of the top running WRC cars were worth watching.
We have been traveling to the Rally Sweden and Rally Norway events for years, and we still go just for the crack as a great lads weekend.
Its just a great shame that all manufacturer support and media coverage is letting this great sport down.
Sure it wont stop us going again next year though!!
