Who build MotorSport cars in Britain?
Discussion
All F1 reams except Sauber, Ferrari and Minardi are UK based and build cars in the UK.
While I can appreciate the talents behind the Prodrive and West Surrey Racing stables, they don't actually 'build' cars, they prepare them from shells and chassis from a manufacturer. And Cosworth make engines, not cars! Colin Blower is also a preparation specilaist, not a producer of original racing machinery.
So, after that.
Radical
Caterham
TVR
Westfield
Van Diemen (Owned by Panoz)
Penske
Lola
Ray
Pilbeam
Chiron
Jedi
Ultima
Lotus (Although, do they actually make motorsport Elises anymore?)
Morgan
Noble (Although you have to prep it yourself)
Lister
There are others, I just don't remember many more off the top of my head.

[but where is sauber f1 based?]
racefan_uk said:But surely if you disassemble a standard car, re-engineer it, then rebuild it - its basically building a car?

racefan_uk said:Well I read here that 'Cosworth Technology' BUILD all Fords rally cars.

racefan_uk said:A great list, as like the others before - BUT which of them have deals with large car companies, for eg- heres my list.....
Penske ,Lola ,Pilbeam ,Chiron ,Ultima,Lister,Van Diemen
BUILDER - CLIENT
Lotus - proton
Williams - BMW
Prodrive - suburu
Raliart - mitsutibshi
Cosworth - ford
Mclaren - mercedes
Know any other BUILDER - CLIENT contracts in the UK?
ps- an didnt TWR build Jags XJ220?
I'd forgotten about Toyota (not difficult), good point.
On the other points. It's open to interpretation. Your original question asked what companies build motorsports cars in the UK.
First - Cosworth is an engine builder, NOT a car builder. You're thinking that they build all the engines for Ford. Not the cars. M-Sport build the works Ford Rally cars.not Cosworth, they supply the donkeys!
As for the people pulling cars apart then rebuilding them. Well, they're doing just that RE-building them, not constructing from scratch. So I wouldn't count them.
Your question is ambiguous. You say Builder/Client contracts.
What you mean to say is; Companies which ENGINEER cars formotorsport on behalf of a manufacturer.
In which case:
Prodrive - Subaru/Aston Martin/Ferrari (Although the 550 project was privately funded)
Ralliart - Mitsubishi (But isn't this coming to an end?)
Lotus - Part owned by Proton (I think) so more a sharing of technology.
Williams/BMW & McLaren/Mercedes - The manufacturers supply the engines, not the chassis. Although Mercedes do own part of McLaren.
RML - Chevrolet (New WTCC deal)
Triple 8 - Vauxhall BTCC
Penske - Cars actually built in the UK, raced in the US
Renault F1 - That's about the only one that supplies own engine to own chassis (since they bought Bennetton and renamed it!)
WSR - MG (BTCC)
