Buggar. I was hoping to sort all of this without shelling out for the £45 MSA video/fact pack...

(or as they used to say on "Why Don't You" - "fac pac")

Found the bit on the MSA website about what you need to get started:

"The Driver must be at least 17 years old and must hold a valid Road Traffic Driving Licence. Before you can apply for your first Stage Rally Driver Licence, you must do the following:

1. Purchase a "Go Rallying" starter pack from MSA which includes a VHS video, a copy of the Motor Sports Yearbook, the necessary application form, plus various other useful items.

2. Complete a one-day MSA course for novice drivers, run only by members of the British Association of Rally Schools (BARS). Contact your local school for costs."

At least the Go Rallying pack includes the Blue Book, that'll give you some bedtime reading. Shame it doesn't tell you the BARS test'll cost 250-300 quid.

RichardJB,
As said above this has only been about for the last couple of years. i was fortunate enough to get a license before this was introduced and even though i only navigate i am licensed to drive on a national A event without the need for a course.
I have noticed though that you are the intended navigator for this guy and as far as i know you will not need to do any course but you will only get a license to navigate which is cheaper that a full driving license.
If you email me in my profile i can put you intouch with my friend who is a BARS instructor, i would put links up to the websites but i think they would be pulled down due to advertising.

Pat Flynn who runs the 205 challenge is also starting up the RWD challenge this year with the idea of a cheap form of entry motorsport based around BMW E30 325i
