There are plenty of opportunities to see Goulds, Forces etc all over the UK in the hillclimb championship . What is extraordinary is that so few people take that opportunity but thousands watch cars ascend a mediocre hill like Goodwood . Must be the chance of seeing a sleb drive ...
I am being slightly unfair as FoS does attract some extraordinary machinery but I do wonder about some people -not on PH obviously _ who appear to think that hillclimbs begin and end at FoS and that the Revival is the only show in town for historics. Must be the panto aspect, all that dressing up ....

Goodwood isn't truly a hillclimb event as such, its about far more than that. I've been 6 or 7 times, and have still never made it to see everything on offer, from the style et luxe, the rally stage, top paddock, supercar paddock, trade show, etc etc. The timed hillclimb section is actually a pretty small segment in comparison.

It's a combination of mass media and sports fans who like a dabble. It's sort of an extension of fat man in the pub won't watch rugby other than the 6 nations, because anything except the very top strata is somehow beneath them.

Porsche GB asked them to do it but they declined saying it wasn't what the 919 tribute was about. All they wanted to do with it was show it was faster than an F1 car and break the Nordschleife record.
I doubt VW would have been bothered if it had been there. After all they are two totally different cars. The VW has smashed the electric record and would go a lot faster with changes to do such a short run.

Why didn't they make those changes? If they could go a lot faster then Heidfeld's time could have been smashed - unlikely to be vested for some time. I don't actually think GRRC actually want the record to be broken, that's why the modern F1 cars were banned from doing timed runs in 1999 (iirc) - it's a normal piece of tarmac, with a crown on it, and spectators close-by behind straw bales. They don't want it turning in to an arms race to go quicker and quicker to break the record each year. They're happy with the time as it is, it's not about going quicker each year, it's just who out of the invited participants is quickest in each years' shootout.
I think if the times continued to get quicker and quicker, then you'd need to increase run-offs, barriers, road surface etc, which would change the complexion of the event and take away much of its charm.

The ban came in from 2001 on. They also banned all the top British hillclimb guys from going, after Wighty got close one year.
I reckon if Merli or Faggioli entered they would beat the record.
Interestingly that BMW 3 series with the Judd engine was a car I though had disappeared, driven in the past by Georg Plasa, a bit of a God in Bergrennen circles, he died a few years ago in the replacement for that car, was amazing to see it in vid clips, here are some stunning Euro hill cars, and Plasa's old 3 series is one of them,

I tried to broker getting the Edlinger 320 IRL to the FoS a few years ago. Never happened but he’d be ascending at a similar pace to Plasa’s car I’d expect. Faggioli would annihilate the hill record - no doubt in my mind about that. I’ve booked to go to the Masters at Gubbio in October - can’t wait to see him in action again. He’s phenomenal.
He is that, but recently he has been getting pasted by Christian Merli, who is even quicker and braver!
Fair play to the lad in Plasa's car, he set one hell of a time, would love to see Reto Meisel, Felix, Schwaiger, Schargl all go up there too! My bet would be Cyrille Frantz I think his name is, very quick lad.
