That is a deliberate wing setting, many used it during qualifying. Alonso tried it during practice, the Chevys needed to run slightly less wing to be close to the Hondas running more wing.
Ah thanks for that. thumbup

It was fun wasn't it but let's be honest, it's a lottery with them all crashing left right and centre. I lost count of how many went out at the end! Was it 4 or 5 of the leaders? laugh
It's all about being in the right place at the right moment. How did the Monaco GP end? I switched off after 4 laps, can't stand that F1 st any more.

Awww the "ESPN on ABC" YouTube feed finished. I was actually happy to stay watching the post-race I enjoyed it so much.

How did the white car challenging for the lead manage to be so competitive with a third of its rear wing missing?
That is a deliberate wing setting, many used it during qualifying. Alonso tried it during practice, the Chevys needed to run slightly less wing to be close to the Hondas running more wing.
Castroneves lost the right side winglet during the first crash. There wasn't anything deliberate about that. What the guy wanted to know was how he was able to stay competitive with bits missing off his car. They adjusted tyre pressures which offset it.

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Will watch more. Along with Moto GP it makes F1 looks embarrassing.

Awesome!!!

Well I must say I have really enjoyed this race. Huge thanks to whoever posted the link to the "ESPN on ABC" feed on YouTube. thumbup
Don't usually does this but a big + for that.

Entertaining race and big thanks for the YT streamer.

BT missed out big time by not selling one day passes.

Well after falling asleep 20 laps from end of F1 today , Indy was a refreshing change. I watched the last hour and a half and the final 30 laps were worth the wait. Well done to Sato, seemed a deserved winner after his 2012 final lap crash. Chilton a very surprising 4th.
Think more people will be tuning into Indy in the future , Alonso has certainly put it on the map for more racing fans.

Yep, me too. I've always dismissed ovals as 'only turning left 4 times' but gave it a go to see how Fred got on. I have to admit as a show, it was awesome. Some of the dicing at 220/230mph was breathtaking, admittedly helped by the impressive camera work. It did indeed make F1 some extremely bland- after half a dozen laps I'd given up on Monaco (... a poor example I know), but Indy was compulsive viewing.

As I said on the F1 thread, Monaco is never about the race. It's an event / junket / time to do deals / revenue generator, and the race is periphery to it.

But I do agree with you. yes

I feel a bit embarrassed having always written off oval racing as boring and to be honest never really even bothered to watch even half of one let alone a whole one.

I was severely mistaken. Will definitely be watching that again! The Americans seem to be a lot more chilled and having fun a lot more than in f1 where everyone has a giant stick up their arse!

I've tried to watch more Indycar racing in the past - but it's only really the super speedways which are a true spectacle. The short ovals aren't anywhere near as exciting to watch and a lot of the drivers look well out of their depth on road courses. Alonso would walk the road courses in that car and pick up enough oval points to take the title comfortably, IMHO.

I'm another one who's been watching the ABC feed on YT, great race and well done Sato, and the other drivers and teams for a thoroughly entertaining few hours. Having also watched the Monaco GP today, I hope that Liberty Media do something to make F1 more "blue collar" the difference between the every-man appeal of the Indy 500 and the elitism of the Monaco GP was so noticeable today, F1 really needs to get itself back to the 99%.

Great result for Sato, anyone who crosses that line first is a deserved winner. Gutted for Alonso though, he looked in genuine contention with his pace and strategy. No one can hate Honda more than him right now surely?

The one thing Alonso (and the world) at least knows is that he is proper top of the tree world champion material. Everyone knows what he can do in a non st car so there at least isn't judging against his performances.

Imagine trying to prove yourself in f1 for the first time even if you were amazing and being lumbered with a rubbish car!

That was great entertainment. I intend to watch more Indycar races now. 20 plus years ago I was a big fan but after the Indycar/IRL split I lost interest. It certainly has upped its game again.

Well, that was bloody brilliant!

I'm an F1 fan and only watched it because of the whole Alonso thing. Prior to today i had not seen a single IndyCar race. I've always been of the 'going around in curved oblong is boring' mindset but that has completely changed.

I honestly cant think of a single aspect where the current F1 is more exciting than indy car. The speed, the noise, the crashes, the constant battles and over takes..not to mention the onboard 360 cameras which are just brilliant.

Very impressed and surprised with the whole thing. Definitely a new fan here.

You've watched the highlight of the season - as I've already posted, the super speedways are great, but they're only a minority of the calendar.

It's like watching the Rider Cup and declaring that you're going to watch more golf in future. Reality is that the occasion is not matched by other events.
