Formula E 2017-18
Discussion
motos(s) gearboxes, rear suspension and inverter all free. chassis and battery and body work all mandated.
new car coming out next year, and improvments to battery tec will mean only one car per driver per race.
lots of different motor and gearbox configs up and down the pit lane. single and twim motors and different numbers of gears.
its nice and hot here in santiago so should be fun..

Who builds these chassis by the way?
Spark racing make the chassis and a Mclaren Applied Technologies produce the batteries. Presumably the teams can still sort the motors, inverter, gearbox and cooling. Can't see that detail mentioned in any or the articles

And what an excellent race it turned out to be.
Yes, by Formula E standards..a few random thoughts re last weekend and F-E in general -- do the circuit designers consider anything other than 90 degree corners ?
- much that I genuinely respect Mike Conway as a driver the Eurosport commentary in Chile was ****, bring back Carlton Kirby or J. Legard...
- I wouldn't like to fall into that river.
- if we have no car swaps next season the formula will begin to gain credibility.
- Scalextric surely could capitalise on producing a Formula E model and perhaps sponsor a car , it would look right and definitely sound right - so why are they more interested in producing obscure versions of 1960/70/80 racing cars (for which I actually applaud them...)

The Eurosport commentary seems to be pretty much universally panned. The Dario Franchitti / Jack Nicholls pairing on the other hand is really excellent.- do the circuit designers consider anything other than 90 degree corners ?

Regarding the car swaps I do agree that it will remove an objection many have to the series but worry that without some kind of strategic element there will be something missing from the races.
It was an excellent race.
Amusing to note the continued vehemence of the naysayers.
Outside the world of us Motorsport enthusiasts people tend to have heard about F1, Le Mans (as race) Indy/NASCAR and FE.Some may know about national series such as BTCC or BGT/F3. Outside the UK there are many Countries with far less comitted fans or frequent occasionals.
If people have only heard or know about two it will be F1 and FE.
I mention something to strangers from America in a hotel on a holiday over a beer about FE. They asked me what I thought about Audi joining in [sic]. These people knew less about F1 than I do NFL.

Its definetly growing on me after my second round. Im fortunate to be able to get up close and personal to all of the cars.
whilst they all look the same the powertrain ( inverter, motor(s), gearbox and rea rsuspension) are all very different across the teams.
I do think next season with the single car will bring a lot more credability.
There really is a push to get FE upto formula 1 levels and there are a lot of engineers and mechanics from F1 teams with the size of the teams growing all the time.
The new car looks interesting https://www.ds-virginracing.com/news/revealed-seas...
with most of the teams already running separate testing teams with the new car.

You clearly didn't watch the Chile race then? The race leader and second place drivers, driving for the same team(!) were physically locked together at one point with two laps to go! Now tell me again it was "boring" and you want "real racing"!They are also very much not "basically the same". Different gearbox, motors, inverters and suspension. The batteries are standard and the bodywork is too....so yes they look the same but underneath they are all different...

Why do people make such a deal with fan boost it makes ni difference to the race its only a few times a overtake has actually been carried out by using it. It's only used once too so it's not like it gives a massive advantage.
Yep, I did have to ask (must be in another FE thread, I thought it was here) what the bother was about, because it's F1 equivalent is having nobody except 3 drivers being allowed to use DRS, and then those three can once in a race. Over a race it's going to make bugger all difference.I accidentally (or more accurately, unfortunately) caught a bit of the Uruguay round on ITV4 last night.
I thought this stuff was being hyped up as "exciting". Jeez about as exciting as watching a wall painting competition. And now not only do the cars all sound like big scalextrics, but with Uruguay the circuit is like one a a child built out of scalextric track as well.
What a shocking, stty mess. And to think the FIA are aiming to ruin World RX in 2020 by moving them all to electrics as well...
