I'm gutted to see that Gerry has past away. He was my first motor racing hero and I've followed him since childhood. In the seventies he used to have a column in Autosport and in the support race to the '77 British Grand Prix, Gerry had a huge accident in his cartwheeling Triumph Dolomite Sprint. His writing was as flambouyant as his driving, as he quipped when he knew he was in trouble: "....there was all sorts of jumping up and down on pedals, whirring of wheels and passing of wind....". I never forgot it and only regret that I missed his racing in recent years. RIP.

A sad loss.

An excellent edition of Motorsport news this week. Entire front page and almost a third of the paper dedicated to him.

I'm sorry to say that I only learned of Gerry's passing on reading his obit in the Telegraph.

I was fortunate enough to own one of his old cars, the Hamilton Motors Magnum, beautifully pictured in Autosport page 18 this week. In all the seasons I raced that car, I never once got it that sideways without losing it!

Gerry was extremely helpful with the car and anything else I needed to know. He even sorted my road-going Monza with some bits left over from his Prod-Saloon version...

A great bloke, a real entertainer and wonderfully funny - cheers mate!

I remember him driving the Lotus Cortina at the Goodwood revival and being the best of rivals with Justin Law , I was told he drove that car so hard he actually bent the chasis ?

Gregor, I think you can safely say that nobody has forgotten Gerry, I still him him talked about in Paddocks and Motorsport bars and of course he looks down on us in the Kentagon at Brands.

Take care, these days are always tough but they do get better. Piglet x

Nothing as yet - Donington did say they'd think about it but the GP has rather taken over there. I think it's the sort of thing where you need someone like Autosport or Motoring News to be behind it.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. tongue out

When I was 8 yrs old, I went to the AMOC meeting at Oulton Park and saw your dad racing the Marsh Plant V8. As he stepped from the car, I approached him for an autograph. He was kind enough to oblige and I still have both the autograph and a photo of the event. I saw him race many times subsequently and he never failed to raise a smile. His performance at Goodwood in the Alvis Grey Lady was simply heroic. He will live on in my memory for years to come as the embodiment of everything which I love about motor sport.
