I had a meeting in Sheffield yesterday and driving up the M1 I thought I'd better pop in to see Old Nail and Dad's trophies at Donington, a few quick photos for you:-

The race original Griff is a much more improtant car, than this early 90 Griff with some mildly tweeked lump - where is that.

Important as the fia are considering using the horrible tacked on arches as the only period ones allowed for these car (not the nicely flared one that most racers have).

Very fitting trophies I'd say wink

Who can name the people in the photos along the top?
I can't name all of them but Gerry is in very good company I'd guess.

Striling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio (but not a great close in pic), Luigi Musso (I think)?

As I said a couple of post up, Gerry is in good company.

Don't worry GBRM, he will never be forgotten.

+1

I literally grew up watching Gerry's exploits in the various Vauxhalls (I used to get taken to Brands Hatch in my pram, apparently...) and I'm sure dad has some photos of those races.

Then I recall seeing him racing an Austin Healey 3000 in a very wet race at Silverstone during one of the Coys Historic events - wiped the board with everyone as I recall.

And then in the big Marsh Plant Aston, lapping the entire field at Brands despite having started from the back of the grid.

No other driver has consistently put a smile on my face like Gerry Marshall smile

Marshall was a legend. I only got to speak to him properly on two occasions, he had me in fits of laughter both times. "Only here for the beer", I'll drink to that drink

Top Bloke a legend. Last time I watched him race was at Donny about 4 years ago he was driving a DB6 my mate was in the same race ( no right to be really) but every time he came to the first corner he just feathered the car through it just a slight drift but perfection non the less just on the limit. And every time he did I just thought wish I could do that.

after gerry died i remember reading an interview with tony lanfranchi, i think it was him anyway, who said that he once asked gerry how many races he had entered & how many he had won.

i think the answer was somewhere along the lines of 'dont know & dont know'. probably didnt care either as he struck me as the being kind of bloke the simply enjoyed racing the cars & then enjoyed going off to the pub to swap stories.

just like tom wheatcroft they dont make 'gerry marshalls' anymore.

sadly.

I did a race driver course at Thruxton in early '70s, and Gerry was the instructor. As a part of the course, he drove me for 3 laps in the Vauxhall at race speed.

I have got to say it was one of the great experiences in my life - aged about 18, I could not believe any human could get a car around any given corner so fast, it was faaaantastic!

And he was just the nicest bloke too. Great memories of a great racer.
