That is a mental looking accident. The fact no-one was killed is astonishing.

No halo in f3/f4?. Macau well known for being a death sentence in waiting. Several bike riders won't go back there now after dan hegartys crash last year.

I've been following Sophia's career since I saw her kicking the boys ass at Thruxton, in the Ginetta Juniors. It truly has to be one of the biggest miracles in motorsport. Without wanting to sound disrespectful to all involved, I've watched the crash quite a few times now, and can't believe nobody lost their life yesterday. The speed is sickening.

I wish all involved the very best with their recoveries.

That is probably the scariest crash I have seen. The car looks like it was launched from a catapult.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all involved.

It looks like she was incredibly lucky to survive that.

By the looks of it the only reason she did was that her head was at exactly the height of the window in the stricture and went through the gap on impact rather than hitting the metal. If she'd hit six inches higher or lower I suspect the roll-bar would simply have punched through the steel and her head would have taken most of the force of the impact.

I'd be interested to know whether the Halo could have survived that and kept her head safe had she been less lucky with the point of impact.

ETA: Could have been nasty for the guy in the yellow car too; her floor must have been within a few inches of his visor.

Halo is very new and cannot just be added to an existing racing car and these F3 cars are a few years old. As new regs are introduced and new cars built to that spec then they probably will be part of the design remit. Having said that, new designs for Japans Superformula and Indy are not including Halo's.

I think that's because they're not run by the FIA. As I understand it all newly designed open cockpit cars for FIA formulae will use them.

A bit worrying about there seemed to be quite a slow response from the Marshals to car/driver
Thought the same. Seem to stand around shell shocked. When I marshalled, we were usually on the run before the car stopped.

I'm not surprised after what happened!

I've been in that photo bunker, and seen the marshals at work there when someone has gone off, and they are very quick to react.

The halo won't help with massive, sudden deceleration so I'm not sure how that would have made much difference here.

Remarkable that she is alive after that, there comes a point where it's difficult if not impossible to protect from certain incidents and that one appeared to be on the borderline, particularly as most of the force seemed to be on top of the car.

To be honest I'd say they are part of the 'incident' so I wouldn't really be expecting them to do too much.

It looks like a few won't have. Had visibility up the straight. So all they are seeing is a normal race then in an instant a car slams into a wall outside the track at high speed.

Going to take a little processing before you know what has happened.

Really, all Marshals are trained to 'count to 10' before reacting to anything...

Brilliant message from her this afternoon:

I survived the operation which took 11 hours well. Hope from now on it only gets better. I have to stay a few more days in Macau until I’m transportable. I want to thank all of my fans for every single get-well wishes, which I now start reading. This really motivates me and gives me courage. My thoughts are also with everyone who was involved in the accident. I hope everybody is healthy. At the accident were really nice people, which I still have in my mind. Thank you for all the encouraging, calming words in these tough minutes in my car. A real big thanks to the medical staff here in Macau for the friendly and professional treatment. A huge thank you to the local @FIA rescue-team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, HWA AG, the FIA organisation and their medical team in the background and the Macau Organisation, who support me in the best way. Also a special thank to Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli and last but not least my Team Van Amersfoort Racing, Facu and Ferdinand, who all suffer with me - you are phenomenal. 🤜🏻I’m going to come back!🤛🏻 btw. Dallara built a very good chassis👍🏻

The fun bit about towers is there's not many ways to get out of the way even if you do see it coming.
