Thought the same. Seem to stand around shell shocked. When I marshalled, we were usually on the run before the car stopped.
Really, all Marshals are trained to 'count to 10' before reacting to anything...
Thats what i thought...If its heading for you, run away until its stopped moving.
After 36 years of marshalling I did learn that running away gives the car something to chase !
The marshalls at the impact point were probably in initial shock . The body systems take some time to process something that violent that happens so close by .
Many will experience total silence and a sort of numbness for a short while until you process what has happened then hopefully the training kicks in and you react the correct way .

That's the way I was trained also. The main thing is not to become part of the incident, so pause, look, assess and then act.

I remember an occasion at Brands when the BRSCC was host to a team of marshals visiting from Holland. The chief marshal took us aside before the day got underway and warned us that they tended to be a little enthusiastic when it came to leaping over the barrier. He told us to stand behind them and if anything happened grab hold of the back of their belts until we were told to go out onto the track by the observer.

Not sure I'd want to find myself charged with the responsibility of restraining an over zealous Dutchman! eek

Having said that, new designs for Japans Superformula and Indy are not including Halo's.
The 2019 Super Formula car has been designed to take a halo and they are in the final stages of testing for it's introduction next year based on the results of a drivers vote.

The latest IndyCar has been designed to use a shield type device which has also been extensively tested as the halo blocks too much of the drivers view on the banked ovals.

Yes see that now, quite a late decision to use it although, as you said, car was designed to use it if mandated.

So many miracles watching that. Simply one of the worst motorsport accidents i've seen, it put a lump in my throat watching it.

Amazing luck aside it's an incredible testiment to just how safe the cars are designed, even then you can't imagine they can even design a safety cell to function fully at that sort of speed.

So very pleased to read that all survived and the driver is on her way home.

Wishing all involved a good recovery.

That’s great to see!

I read yesterday they’ve heavily modified the part of the circuit she went off at too to avoid cars being ‘launched’ in the same way. I think it was one of those one in a million type events, but good to see them expanding safety anyway.

Great to see she has got a full year drive in a top F3 team:

Sophia Florsch will make her full-time FIA Formula 3 debut in 2020, and completes Campos Racing's line-up.
