Why would I want to organise rallies, I have no interest whatsoever in doing so.
It's not for everyone, that's for sure........you never know, you might enjoy it and be good at it.

Are we contradicting ourselves here?:

I am aware that the ability for people to spectate is not to do with the MSA,

the MSA have basically banned or made it utterly pointless for specs to attend single venues, like airfields etc. That is clear
Anyway, to answer this:

but they could make efforts to help surely?
I think Motorsport UK are heading in that direction, they now acknowledge that their role is to promote the sport as well as govern. It's summarised in this press release.

It's usually to do with insurance, lack of marshals and simply not wanting anyone there because basically it's a ball ache you could do without?
From events I'm aware of, it's a combination of all these. There is plenty to do just getting a viable event off the ground. But to be honest, there is very little immediate benefit to the organisers from the presence of spectators. The benefits are all long-term (e.g. getting more people into the sport, exposure for sponsors, boost for affected local businesses etc). It's pretty rare that any event income is derived from spectators. Where there is a ticket charge (e.g. MSV Circuit rallies) it generally goes to venue.

Even so, organisers have to plan for safe spectating. Lucky there are plenty of volunteers doing that, to enable others to enjoy competing or spectating.........

Closed road rallies, you are herded as you are on SV's, I guess that is the way we are now.
I've been going to the Mull Rally for years. Never once have I been herded.

I have advocated a pass system for years. Whereby fans can register, attend training courses, marshal days and be what most of us were, marshals passing by at times. It's still always hard to police an airfield, but this at least would allow those fans that want to attend rallies like that, safely, with the knowledge theya re at risk, the chance.
Didn't we show you in this thread, or maybe the last one, why this couldn't work?

Perhaps Corsica could replace Sweden as the annual snow rally.....biggrin

Was it Corsica that ran a few years ago and was WET beyond comprehension ?
2015 that was. Elfyn Evans outshone everyone other than JML and bagged 2nd place. That year it was run in October tho.

Meeke quickest on shakedown

One of the juniors had a big hit during shakedown!

There will be designated, planned and controlled spectator areas in places where large crowds are expected. Other places won’t be “advertised” as such but of course people know where to go as they have been, generally safely, for 50 years. Some dangerous areas will be cordoned off.

I think it’s an inaccuracy to say that you’re not permitted to watch outside the “pens” on other rallies. You are of course not legally allowed to walk on the closed road or on private land without permission. But as long as you’re in a safe place, you’ll be fine. If you’re in a dangerous place you’ll be asked to move. If you don’t move, the stage may be cancelled. That’ll make you very unpopular.

The issue for popular closed roads and forests is that they have to plan for spectator access and parking. Parking on the verge of public roads is not really accepted nowadays, so designated and advertised spectator areas have to take that into account. Hence there were only a few areas advertised on eg Clacton and North West Stages.

Some councils (Aberdeenshire) also require your spectator area to have an event licence, which means toilets, security, paramedics, risk assessments etc.

Who’d want to be a rally organiser, eh?

My Corsica prediction Meeke, Ogier, Tänak. I think. I’ve changed that configuration about 4 times so I’m trying this one.

Ogier for the win, Tanak 2nd and Evans 3rd. Meeke will be on rally winning pace but something really unlucky will befall him and he’ll be 4th. Loeb 5th, Sordo 6th. Neuville retire with broken suspension, JML and Sunninen off but contiune with Rally 2. Lappi engine failure.

I wanted to go with Evans in 3rd but I’m just not sure the Fiesta is up to the job against the Yaris and c3 which we know was good on tar last year in meekes hands!
Would love to see his confidence continue here this weekend tho

Elfyn Evans putting up a good show today. I think Gwyndaf is on the pace note crew too. Looks like the top 5 will be close if they all stay on the track.

Brilliant day from Evans, carrying on his form from Mexico. I don't think he'll be able to maintain his lead over Tanak, but it is an event he has gone well on in the past.

Meeke back to his usual up and down self!

Currently chilling out with a coffee and laptop, watching the live GPS map of the cars making their way to the stage start on BTSport Extra, surprisingly relaxing.

But then nowhere on 10! Hyundai really need the rumoured big mid-season upgrade package to work

Cracking battle at the front still.
