Jezz , That James Hinchcliffe crash was hard , Tough cars these , glad he's out and walking
Great explanation by Dixon there...basically the difference between a fast lap and a spin is changing the centre of pressure of the car. Too far forward and the rear comes around, too far back and it’s slow/ understeers.

Fine lines n all that!

Watching this, can they run again if they're not happy with their position?

Alonso currently 28th, has to be out unless he can go again.

Yes but they lose their first time so if they go slower the slower result stands.

Edited to add, they can abort their 2nd run if it's going slower and they don't lose their first time.

No choice but to take a second run for Alnoso now - still slowest and now outside the top 30.

I fear Graham Hill's achievement will remain unmatched this year.

I don't see Alonso troubling the shootout this year.

Great run from Ben Hanley!

I think Alonso will just scrape through even if he needs to go for the final six. Then in a pack I wouldn’t put it past his race craft to get him up through the pack to stand a chance at a good finish.

But his speed is showing that if he is out front at the white flag he would be a sitting duck.

The basic car balance and grip isn't close to what he needs to feature in the race, should he make it in.

I agree but i think im right on saying there are no parc ferme rules from sunday to the race so they have a week to work on it to make it better.

There are mumblings about the second car not being quite up to the standard of the McLaren prepped one.

I may be out of date as watching qualifying with sound off as the wife is watching Eurovision!

Not quite accurate. The car he’s in now is the spare car after crashing the Mclaren one. It’s basically a road course car turned into a speedway car.

With that said the Mclaren prepped car was no quicker than this before he crashed it

No excuses though really, Kimball his teammate is in 19th

it would have to be one hell of a turnaround for Alonso to be competitive.

Dunno.

He is out now, has to run again tomorrow to try and get in the last 3.

Bumped to bump day, where he has to fight Max Chilton for a spot on the last row of the grid.

Can Alonso switch to the other chassis for the race, if they rebuild it?
Yes, but that was no quicker. They’ve just not been quick this month. Personally think Mclaren have been either naive or arrogant thinking they could rock up with so little practice and do well

He should just sign up with a proper team and do the full series.
Define proper team? Carlin run the Mclaren, just with 3 mclaren mechanics. They do Indycar full time. The likes of Pippa Mann, Hanley qualified in tiny teams who only do the occasional race

My buddy Mike Harding runs a small team and his car was 5th fastest today with an 18 year old driver.

Plenty of knowledge and history behind that entry.

I watched last night, because of Alonso. I had thought that a team like McLaren could just rock up and make a good show. There is clearly a lot more needed than just turning up to play on the day, notwithstanding it being “just a one-make; two-engine series”.

It is something of an eye opener.

This is also a good lesson for kids and reminder for grown ups that you should always be nice to everyone. The only reason Alfonso is in this situation is due to him being a prima-donna. Honda doesn't want to be associated with him now, hence why he couldn't team up with the likes of Andretti, like he did 2 years ago where he rocked up at Indy 500 and looked like a hero.

Even though its members have experience, the team is effectively new so I'm surprised they tipped up with just one day of testing (that didn't go too well) under their belt - especially when you assume the whole thing is a 'money no object' undertaking. As has been said, Fernando didn't do himself any favours with Honda so arguably the best package wasn't available to him - another reason for extra testing you would have thought.

On the positive side, find a magic tweak or two (... or possibly 5 or 10!) and it is possible to win this race from the back.
