I have walked away from club level rallying, as a fan or speccy it is almost hidden now and unwatchable to be honest which is a shame, it never used to be.

AS for the insurance comment, I am aware of how it all works, and the closed roads I have seen are not as chicane strewn as MSV events, I watched one a few years ago at Snett and watched every stage onboard a quick car, he never got into top gear once, that is not really a rally in its truest sense. But they work for what they do and I will still attend the odd one.

Again I get it, I get why all this happens but as I say, this is not rallying as it ought to and should be, so I leave it alone, I watch the odd event that still caters for my tastes, but not many do sadly.
But the competitors must like them, judging by the numbers of WRC, as well as more affordable cars, taking part, along with the fact that most of the MSVR circuit events are often very oversubscribed within minutes of entries opening, 30-50 reserves is not unheard of.
And often plenty of spectators, more so than at most club racing meetings.

But it isn't proper rallying , according to some. The fact it is actually getting people out to watch rallying and competitors enjoy them , doesn't apperently make it rallying.

The “proper events, proper drivers, proper cars’ borefest is one that been going on for years. The fault that events have disappeared, what remains got shorter and the supply of good used rally cars for sale has all but dried up isn’t the fault of anyone newly involved with the sport now, it’s down to those who have been involved previously.

Re the circuit events and routes within them. I have seen videos of (maybe) Oulton using link roads including some loose ones. I expect this is pretty unpopular with some people. The dearth of multi surface events does seems to have brought very specialised tarmac only cars now. I did a super fast tarmac event one week and won the 2 litre class then the woodpecker a month later (and definitely didn’t win the class) and my only change was to change from slicks to Colway gravel tyres!

My recollection of the challenge/loss of those multi surface events was that the regulation change that meant a paramedic equipped rescue unit was needed at each stage venue made some of the farm/woods/quarry/airfield events not viable. Which was a shame, loved ‘em.

Trackrod Rally this weekend in the Yorkshire forests, looks to have a decent entry.
Damn, forgot about this - last I looked it's was closed to spectators but it's open now.

But that must surely be a good thing having safety cover readily available on every stage?

Yes, you will note I didn't criticise the change. But only referenced it as a potential reason for a loss of viability of event types that bridged SV and full on FC land events and meant that people had cars that were flexible for all three

I also think that some people forget that circuit rallying has been happening for years. Brands, Cadwell, Donnington, Snetterton Croft held rallies for years. We should be grateful that Mr. Palmer has allowed rallying to continue and not stopped it as BARC has at Croft.

Lo, grateful, he is doing it to make money off season, not for any other reason. The guy knows how to make money, it is that simple, he cashed in on what was already going on and made hay, I doubt the events are cheap to run, but they get good entries are safe and very MSA pleasing as a result .

Again, I am not saying it is all bad, the events work clearly, but maybe they work as there is nothing else, they work as they are easy, cars don't break, stages are very similar. Events at Cadwell in the past were more like rallies, lots of off road, longer stages, night running etc, you dont get as much of that now. For lots of good reasons I might add. But it just takes the edge off aswell.

I can recall being at a single venue before it was all ruined and guys there were talking about how they did not like the MSV events as it was simply like racing, cars could be built differently with less rally strength, but that also meant if you used the same car on a proper rally it would become unreliable meaning that some crews were using almost two setups, shocks, springs, wheels, tyres etc.

Obviously this is evolution, MSV saw a gap, realised rallying was on its arse and picked up the ticket, but for a lot of fans and crews, they are a bit meh.

It's not hard to simply have different opinions, they might not suit yours, but that is the point of a forum.

Really enjoying Finland this morning. Breen going well (great to see), but Evans very impressive in the last stage. Seemed to be much left on the table there. So close at the front.

Just watched SS12. Evans and Tanak Incredible speeds, the cars are reaching 180plus kph several times trough each stage. Craig Breen saying he just can't quite get that last bit of speed though hes doing pretty well for a part timer!

Best rally in the world starts Friday! Should be interesting to see how the brc guys do. If it stays wet the local knowledge will definitely come into its own. Sad to see Duffy not on the entry and my own lol.

But at least we are having a rally, provided everyone can get enough fuel to get there do the event and get home again.

Congrats to Elfyn Evans, 1000 Lakes/Rally Finland Winner. Coming after wins in Sweden last year he's fast become the fastest driver in the WRC and definitely top 3.

I had some reservations about him at the start of his WRC career, but he has definitely shown that hard work pays off.

A good boyo.

Good result for Elfyn, seems a pity he couldn’t find some of this speed mid season
