Just been reading thorough this thread after tracking down the illusive Joolz - why isn't your new website on your profile Mr trackcar!!!
Must admit to be staggered at the costs being quoted to compete. As has been said, a brand spanking new G20 is around £12k, fully preped (save for a bit of brake bleeding) and ready to go. To put things into perspective, my new engine this year (due to regs change) cost about £575 (formula ford Zetec), with replacements if they blow up at around £800. These are sealed, so you can't rebuild them even if you want to. Power is around 150-160 bhp into 670 kg. The cars are also particularly easy to fix as Graham will tell you.
Entry costs are high (£500 inc VAT per meeting), but for that you get 30 mins qualifying and at least two 20 minute (plus a couple of laps) races.
I have done this season on a £5k plus VAT budget (but that is really a couple of grand short of a low cost entry) due to moving house. If people are honest, you probably wouldn't get eight (well, seven as I am away for one) double header weekends for that in the TVRCC challenge.
I have raced against David Brabham, VBH, Richard Dunwoody, Tiff Noodles, Louise Goodwood etc., plus Rob Austin, Tom Ferrier, Matt Nicol-Jones as series entrants. And the Autosport editor who is presently doing pretty well in the MX5 championship got thorougly spanked when he had a go this year.
For all this, the value is astounding, and there is room for those at the top of national motorsport and the likes of me and thee who just push the car out of the van and go for it.
We are even getting to support the first ever A1GP race at Brands this year - a card that has been filled with large grid, entertaining series.
Last year Ginettas were possibly the most succesful championship going. This year, the original 40+ entries have fallen to around the 30 mark, so even we are struggling.
Point is, if we have comparable (or even cheaper) costs, fantastic racing, big grids, and very big meetings, and even we are struggling to maintain the stratospheric success of last year.
Whilst it is nice that TVR's can run in different classes etc, I have to agree with the first post in the thread. The races have to be amalgamated to a single grid (even if this includes non TVR's), with rule changes to make things safe in this configuration. That way the grids go back up, the racing gets more exciting and the series expands to a level where it may be possible to split off various categories again.
Just my 2p, but I, like many, would like to see TVR's continue to race with a reasonable profile in this country - and find ways to encourage all of the garaged cars back to the track. Any measures should be considered to achieve this.

There is no doubting the Ginettas are a good package, but I dont think the TVRCC Challenge is anymore expensive than the majority of the club level championships out there. converting a road car will cost you more than buying a purpose built special but then again I've spoken to 3 people this week with class A cars for sale at 3k, 4k and 6k just about ready to go. Im confident you can build a chimaera for 10-12k, the biggest expence being the roll cage at about 1500quid
My own buget to run the car this year is 6k and that includes a new gearbox and an engine refresh, and 12 races (4*double headers) and half a dozen test days. I've even managed to streatch a season out of a set of tyres !!!
Things are looking quite promising for next season, there are cars available and im talking to people who are interested incomming out. At Croft we had 4 more cars, and at mallory we should gain another two, with Kevan re joining and Geoff back from wedding duties..

Far be it from me to teach my betters but the 8mm holes in the shock sleeves were never meant to have bolts through them. They are intended only as pilot holes for you to drill out to a suitable size for your car. I thought everybody new that. Tsk!
Not when the dampers are custome built and ordered to work with the correct sized bolts!!!!!! it would seem a little pointless for them to ask you to specify them otherwise. duh

That's why it's OFR. Anyway, don't mince your words Iain. What are you trying to say.
Rgds,
Tim.

I'm trying to say that in a seasoned pair of hands like your own, your ferry is probably just as quick and impressive as your car!
See you on for a the 24th if not before. Keep well.

Iain
