I haven’t been to the Silverstone Classic for years but thought I would take my dad in 2022. Last time we went was about 12 years ago and we had hospitality that was located along the old start / finish straight which worked well.

I’m after some advice on where the best view is located from a hospitality area? I also need to consider access as my dad has a mobility disability and can’t manage large flights of stairs and long walks.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have a look at prices, cheapest day is 50 quid, but a weekend ticket seems reasonable if you want to stay at an airfield for 2 nights lol.

Depends what you like, I am not a fan sadly, got way out of my price range, lots of car clubs, some interesting cars also some interesting cars driven really badly by rich blokes with no idea, but that is the same at most car races on circuits. But access is great, lots of hooray henrys which can be fun if you and your Dad enjoy taking the Mick, but can be a bit stuffy also at times.

You might get music, fairs etc, so a more family feel than you might expect, but as I say you have to pay fir it, it is of me preposterously expensive for what it is.

Think of it as council house Goodwood (but at the same price) and youa re pretty close,

If you have an appropriate car Piston Heads have promised a stand this year which means you can get BOGOF tickets if you a car to bring to their stand.
If not then it depends what you want.
I love the event, great racing, great access, great music and I think they have quite good accessibility policies.
I think the Council estate Goodwood is a bit disingenuous. It's a bit like the "That's not a Classic" attitude to many cars. I like the range of cars at the Classic both on display and racing. From pre-war to 80s and 90s F1 and endurance racers. The music can be hit and miss depending on the theme, but we've had some great nights as well.
The pits are open and you can go in and talk to the drivers and owners, most love telling you about their cars. Friday (qualifying day) is usually best for that as it's less crowded and they've more time and you have more space.
We'll be there (camping at Whittlebury campsite) all weekend as always.

It's a great event , which I have attended for the full three days for years. May I suggest you ignore Mr Brown's churlish comments -he seems to have a chip on both shoulders about the Classic. I love it , despite being lukewarm about the circuit these days . There's usually an entry of 1000- 1100 cars , covering F1 to touring cars, and spanning eight or nine decades. Some fab stuff in the infield too.

It is access all areas , including pit garages up to the edge of the pitlanes - two paddocks , remember. There is a free bus service , which helps, and you can also hire mobility scooters on site. I see a fair few in use , as spectators are of all ages.

Timing is important - essentially the old pits are in use in the mornings and the Wing in the afternoon . It can be a good idea to go to the pits which aren't live as there are fewer people around and it's easier to chat . And you never know who you can end up talking to at an event like this....

Depends on your budget, I consider the amount being asked a lot for what it is, but I must be wrong as tens of thousands seem happy to hand over hundreds for a clb meeting.

Silverstone have never had it so good.

Cheapest ticket is 50 quid FFS IN ADVANCE, that is not good value now is it, in anyone's mind? or am I out of touch.

In which case I am delighted to be out of touch, lining of the pockets of greedy chancers like Silverstone and Goodwood (£77 this yea is preposterous to watch a load of old men drive craply up a blokes drive)

these events are clearly not priced at the likes of me, they are priced at middle class, rich people, I have no idea why, but it seems to work doesn't it, they never used to be and that is the same of it, i can recall spending not much more than 20 quid on Classis tickets on Saturdays and not much mroe on FoS tickets.

They can see you coming is all I can say.

How many times ? BTCC costs £30 plus for essentially spec racing , with grandstand seats extra . Even my local circuit's clubbies are 15 quid , stuff like Autograss is a tenner and a big Santa Pod meeting is over 30 quid.

Here's what I do - I belong to a car club for the sole purpose of getting cheap infield tickets to Classica and Donington Historic . That costs me 30 quid per annum . A 3 day pass to the Classic cost about 100 quid and includes a spare 3 day ticket - so about 18 quid a day . I infield park (why wouldn't I?) but if you are pathologically opposed to belonging to a car club (naming no names) park outside and walk in.

As for a class thing - bks. Like nearly every sort of motorsport there's all sorts - and that adds to it . Some of my best friends are toffs , others are welders .

Bit harsh! I prefer it to Goodwood and just up the road from Goodwood.

I find a lot less snobby than Goodwood plus you don’t have to dress like a tt.

Though I get what you mean by some of the driving but then that’s typical of all historic racing.

Do you like anything? Every single motorsport thread is plagued by you moaning about EVERYTHING. However I do agree with your Goodwood comments...

I’ll be going to the classic for all three days, and will happily pay the premium for the quality of racing, freedom of the paddock and show that the classic brings.

And to say it’s a ‘poverty Goodwood’ is ridiculous as it’s a completely different event. You can either watch good hard racing, or demo (even that’s pushing it) runs of priceless cars that are tickled to the top of the hill. Wouldn’t Goodwood be 100 times better if all runs were timed and it was competitive? Pick 5/10 cars out of all leading historic series etc and let them fight it out.

Saying that, I attend both and I’m not a middle class toff.

I'm not going to get in to a slanging match: However I will point out if you are affiliated to a participating club (There are some I know that are free to join) then that £50 is BOGOF so £25 each. If there's only you, you just have to find someone in the same boat and buy a ticket between you. A few years back there were 3 of us, but we found someone who was coming on their own and bought their spare BOGOF ticket win/win.

I just think if you're/we're going to complain about prices we should endeavour to be accurate.

I do have to say: If I didn't have any friends to share a BOGOF ticket with I probably would have to think longer and harder before buying. But saying that For a (very) big car club meet (typically £10), historic racing (£15-25) and a multi act gig in the evening (£30-loads!) £50 is actually good value if you're up for making a day of it.

I checked the prices on the Silverstone site before posting.

And for some, agreed a concert is fair enough, I have zero, less than zero interest in that if I want to see a band I will see them in a proper venue for a proper gig time, not a likely bunched up gig to take the money and run at this place, it works for some and I get why they do it, to try and get the missus along and make it family middles class day out in the sun and a nice evening to boot with all the fairs, stalls, etc, it is kind of like an event rather than a race meeting

Car clubs, the same, did it once, was the stuffiest thing I have ever done linked to motorsport and that was with my Dad, he hated it as much as I did and I would never ever do it again, but I get why it works for them to do this.

But for a single guy, 50 quid for a practice day is a rip off (no doubt there are races or this would bot totally unjustified I couldn't be arsed to check), the weekend tickets is the value deal which is I expect what most people do rather than rolling up for a day only, hence the value is there. I could not be less interested in watching histrionics for 3 days, hence for me that is not value either, but I see why it is for some.

So as you can see when you work it out based on what you get and what as a person you like, it used to be a good meeting, cheap tickets, no pointless (for me) stuff tacked on so good event, it made money so Silverstone sold it to promoters and they now exploit it like the people that run ASI, Race Retro do aswell it's called making money, I don't like being ripped off personally so not for me, but I get why people do like it and how therefore this event makes a ton of money, out of those people.

Maybe you should try the Lyden Hill event in the summer: Historics on the Hill.

It’s cheap as chips to get in, very well attended, loads of racing and being a small circuit that sits in a bit of a dip, you can stand at the high end and follow the entire race.

Castle Combe had a similar event in the spring.

I can also highly recommend HSCC Cadwell , in June . The circuit is at its prettiest then , and a scrapping field of FF1600 or FF2000 often makes it just a perfect day.

I can verify that tickets for LE Mans Classic are actually far cheaper than the Silverstone event.

LMC is only cheaper if you're paying for my petrol ,ferry and accommodation mate . And so what - you can enjoy both - they're hardly mutually exclusive ...

My point being, where would you honestly rather go? A special place, or erm Silverstone! No frills either at Le Mans, just cars.

Yes SS Classic is like a Lyden hill event compared to LMC .
