I haven't seen the race yet but saw he only got 20th so I'm sure there's a story there, especially if he was up to 6th.
The front anti-roll bar broke on the car.

Scott Dixon.

Always consistent in the Indycar series, be it ovals or road tracks. Rarely has an off day, and rarely goes backwards in races.

Given the evenness of cars and engines and general "randomness" of other drivers and races, he has consistently been top 4 in championship for past 15 years (with one "bad" year in 6th).

That level of consistency is very impressive.

Very good shout that consistency is hard to ignore, I wonder why he never even left Indycars?

I say this because I think Shane Van Gisbergen is a very underrated racing driver, he pretty much cleans up no matter what he drives.

He'll never fit in a single seater but I expect to see him win Le Mans soon.

Anyone else have a driver they rate?
Agree. I was stuck on an Aussie owned mine in west Africa last year with the only saving grace being their sports subscription cabled into every room. Watched the first half dozen races, SVG was just a joy to watch.

His weekend at sandown surely has to meet the requirements for a legendary drive. Won all 3 races, the first one coming from p17 on the grid in the wet. Oh and he was racing with a broken collar bone and 3 broken ribs…

ETA: Seems a top bloke out of the car as well.

If I had to venture an opinion (and it's only that), I think he just loves the US and Indycar - he always strikes me as very calm, measured and relaxed (probably why he's so good) - not sure his personality would suit F1 or vice versa. He does IMSA, but rarely ventures into WEC or anything else worldwide - even though I'm sure he could snap up a WEC drive just like that if he wanted.

what we need is a race to see who's the best.

Oh Yes let's call it the Race Of Champions.

He gets paid very well as a multiple race winner in Indycar. If any F1 team were to come calling, and at his age it’s not happening now, it would be Williams or Haas. Why should he give up his huge pay check, a much shorter, domestic based season and success for a poor F1 drive where he’s basically away from his family from March to early December?

Dixon never agve Europe a chance, he simply decided America is for him, fair enough, but that is a career killer.

A few others tried it here and made careers elsewhere, even the great Lowndes started his career over here as did Ingall, it doesn't always work.

I think the majority of times if you are good enough you will get picked up, but there are many who slip through the cracks, I do not think Dixon is one of them! He is very good yes, but I wuld not class him as one of the greats outside of f1 when you look at some other talents

Dixon tested for Williams in the early 2000s but it never went any further.

Bit left field this one but bear with me
Mark Higgins

He managed an average lap speed of 128.73mph around the IOM TT Course

Peter Hickman holds the bike record at 135mph average, anyone else who has tried it in a car has got nowhere near what Higgins has acheived and there is a video of it on the Tube of You that is worth watching

Great lap but not comparable to the bike which has to race to a set of rules but he was driving the wheels off of that car, as a side bar still slower than a 600cc supersport wink

Apart from that lap I don't see him as anything exceptional unless I've missed him dominating some rallies in his pomp?

He's a multi time BRC Champion - and now a James Bond stunt driver. Probably didn't get the breaks at WRC level, like many British drivers....

he had a very capable car and the opportunity to do what is not something that car teams/manufacturers are interested in or able to attempt. i would wager that if this wasn't the case his time would be smashed pretty quickly, as impressive as it is.

I would think that given time one of the top hillclimb men like Faggioli or Merlil or Bergenaud would smash that time, in a prototype class car, but Higgy has a huge advantage as he lives on the Island so knows the track layout aswell as we all know Silverstone or Brands Hatch. Plus that car was very cleverly suited to that track. But a 3 litre proto would be much faster in the corners.

Has anyone else had a proper crack at it in a car other than Tony Pond in the Rover 827?

Higgins is a very good driver of course and has won more than his share of rallies up to national level, but no world-beater.

There's some very talented guys in Historic racing; Martin Stretton, Nick Padmore and Michael Lyons who's possibly the "Goat" of Historic racing or will be.

Hopefully they don’t mind me saying They’re all getting on a bit too aren’t they?! The way they can chuck round Lola T70s and Hstoric F1 cars is mightily impressive. The DFV F1 cars can lap the Silverstone GP circuit in 1.52…

The British Hillclimb championship contenders are on another level too

Alright, I'll do it.

Who?
Pickering has serious temper issues. Makes Ticknum look like a saint and I doubt he’d fit in a single seater these days. He’s let himself go tbh.

The British hil guys are on one level, then the European guys are at a slightly different one, public roads, no run off, mage fast cars, it really is a staggering level of commitment the top guys have

Scott McLaughlin - Wins 3 Aussie Supercar Championships then switches to Indycar where he is proving to be consistent race winner and championship contender. That certainly shows a high level of natural talent and real versatility. It's going to be interesting to see how he does in an LMP2 sportscar at the Daytona 24hr.
