As a Formula 1 spectator for many many years I've dipped in and out of Formula E. The complete F1 calendar is on my bucket list

However, early days but the racing is so much closer to F1 and tactics are fore and centre. Give it another decade and it will be difficult to sustain F1

9th season I believe we are into now , I have tried watching many many times , nope ,still can't get on with it

I watched yesterday because Italy ,that crash that took out 6 cars was purely down to a crap and narrow temporary circuit .

It's a place where motorsport careers go to die .

Early days? It's nearly 10 years since the first season.

I've tried watching a few times over the years but Formula E does nothing for me

You say it is dreadful but give no opinion as to say why.

A decade is absolutely nothing,

F1 commenced circa 1950 long before most here even existed so you have no concept how F1 looked like back then.

2023 will be the equivalent of 1970. Back then 500bhp was the norm.

The circuits are a bit pants at the moment, far too restricted.

What will be your opinion when Formula E becomes the same or less weight than the ICE equivalent with say 800kw?

The main Formula E 2023 thread is 3 below this one and there has not been 1 post today ,that's how exciting today's race was , no I didn't watch ,the Tour de France on bicycles is way more entertaining .

Yesterday it got posts due to a huge crash that could have been very nasty for Sam Bird .

No you're right, it's impossible for us to know what F1 was like in the 1960s... hehe

Just guessing here, but I think F1 back then had more of an enthusiastic following than FormulaE today 10 years in.

It's slow. The tracks are too short. The battery capacity of the cars are too restrictive. The tracks are too narrow. The 'fan boost' nonsense is nonsense. The acceleration rate of the cars are identical. There are too few overtakes. The cars are all the same. The drivers aren't great.

The energy restriction is by design - it's to drive progress in efficiency. 'Fan boost' isn't a thing any more. There are also many overtakes. There are many series where the car is the same, although in this instance the power trains are all different. I do agree on the tracks though, they're now developed to the stage where they could use smaller proper Circuits. Brands Hatch would be a good one, rather than the inside of a conference centre.

Personally I like where they're at speed wise They look like they have a little too much power for the tyres/aero which makes them move about a bit. The strategy element, where its not necessarily advantageous to be in the lead adds another dimension too. I also couldn't give a monkeys about the perceived level of the drivers either. It's decent entertainment, particularly this season with the gen3 cars.

Honestly if there was an F1 race with as much going on people would mess themselves with excitement.

Hey ho. Each to their own.

That is true, quite how they have ended up with such a ridiculous look is incredible after 3 generations

The series has some excellent drivers, but it’s just dull to watch

That’s a bit harsh on Scalextric, which gave many of us a load of fun times in our younger years.

Like many others, I’ve tried to get with FE but failed every time. The cars are still too slow, the circuits temporary and rubbish, too many gimmmicks and attempts to force a close race that instead tend to result in a procession.

It’s not even particularly road-relevant, using batteries off the shelf. They’d be much better off making the whole drivetrain full prototype, getting several battery manufacturers involved, with the regulation weight of the car not including the battery. Yes, we’d probably see a few fires along the way, and some cars being faster than others, but that’s how things get developed quickly. Ask Mercedes why they quit FE, and also how quickly they’ve managed to transfer the new F1 engine tech onto their road cars.

No - it started four years earlier. And GP racing began forty years before that.
