My uncles old Shadow (F1, not can-am, obviously), driven here by Mike Littlewood, with Peter Denty at the back of the car.

Very cool!

Top right?

My own personal moment came shortly afterwards, seeing (and hearing) Gerhard Berger's 1989 V12 Ferrari bottoming out causing an eruption of sparks. Being an emotional and nostalgic fool I realised I had tears in my eyes.
Don't worry, you weren't alone! smile
Indeed - and I was watching at home ....

I'm an old git now and noticed about ten years ago that some old racing cars, Ferraris especially, provoked that reaction in me. I remember my only sighting of a 312P , testing before the Silverstone Classic, when I realised that I ...err... had something in my eye... But Jeez , that sublime, fallen angel howl , who wouldn't sob , eh ?

Maybe we need a trigger warning ?

Yep, it's very strange, but certain F1 engines do that to me as well..... certainly that Ferrari at the weekend, the Renault V10 in the Williams at FoS a couple of years ago, and it doesn't even have to be 'live' (though that helps!)....this, played LOUD through good speakers / headphones....eish!!

It astonishes me that Honda actually set this up. The logistics of taking car telemetry and translating it into sound and light at the correct location on the track boggles my mind...what a great company!

That is stunning. And proof that the Japanese in general and Honda in particular are racers to their core.

Remember the 1500 F1 era? Sweet Coventry Climax V8s , sundry fours but a screaming flat 12 from Ferrari in the 1512 and , from Honda a V12. I've stood next to the former as it was being warmed up and ...there aren't the words to describe that sound. I'd love to hear the Honda live.

If you believe all the rumours about Don Nicholls, he could have probably got one of those...

There is a documentary about canam 81’ series here on YouTube some great in car around Laguna Seca and Riverside - the cars are nothing like as wild as the early canam cars were

It was called circuit - life begins at 180.

I used to run a few different historic can am cars , one sticks in my mind was a lola, and warming it up was an experience, you had to hold the throttle in the engine bay while squirting fuel into the trumpets and altering the mixture as it warmed up, the sound was immense, you could feel the floor vibrate. Awesome things, but very scary at the same time. Even driving it round the paddock was frightening.

I've found the CanAm cars very easy to drive, shed loads of torque is much nicer than a peaky low torque engine.
There is nothing quite like the pull of a big block CanAm car at high speed, acceleration is relentless.
I've built many of these cars and driven quite a few, they are special things and not as intimidating as many people suggest when you get to drive them, they are proper racing cars that go where you point them and have great manners, if built properly.
Remember these things raced in very long races with no refuel/tyre stops, they had to be driver friendly and strong enough to last.
The early Shadows were a bit daft really, but the later ones were much more realistic racing cars.

Here’s my video from the day. I hope it gives you some idea of noise and the atmosphere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEJ4T1ae1iU&t=...

Sorry it’s not quite full broadcast quality but don’t think it was too bad for a IPhone and camera with a video feature. (It was shot over both days.)
