It looks like Tony Jardine has been dumped from the ITV F1 team (according to Pitpass.com).

It seems to me they've kicked out the wrong man.

Great, get rid of one of two people that know what they're talking about! At least they've got Steve Rider in, I 'spose

Was sitting in a mates car the other day, the air was a bit blue from a few examples of bad driving - I thought that would make good F1 commentry..."What the ****'s Montoya doing?"..."Don't be a ****, Michael"

They have indeed.
Okay, Jardine may not be the most exciting guy in town, but at least the man races.
It simply boggles the mind that they continue to employ Allen. He is perhaps the most disliked and contemned presenter in any sport, yet there are no signs that his employers will do a public service by sacking him.
Relative to Jardine's active involvement in vintage racing, does anyone know what Allen's motoring qualifications look like? I doubt that he can parallel park. Is he licenced to drive a manual gearbox car? For that matter, is he even licenced to drive an automatic?

Great.
First the bore.
Now the pillock.
Just the cock to go and they should have a great team.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if Goodman and Kravitz went as well.

And rally's of course so an interesting mix of knowledge, though with more an more F1 cicuits having huge tarmac or concrete run-off areas I guess the rallying experiences are less helpful than previously.

Maybe his racing commitments mean he can't make the GP's?

Asfar as I knew Jardine doesn't actually race anything. He does quite a lot of rallying and has done a few one off race events. In the real world he owns and runs Jardine PR, which more likely the reason he can't do the F1 stuff any more.

St Mary’s Trophy
In Goodwood's heyday, this was a race for all manner of production saloon cars. At the Revival the race caters alternately for 1950s and 1960s saloon cars. It is a two-part event with an aggregate result, with one race for the vehicle’s owner and another for a professional touring car driver. Legendary participants include Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Derek Bell, Steve Soper, Gabriele Tarquini, Perry McCarthy, Jackie Oliver, Johnny Herbert, Emanuele Pirro, Jason Plato, Darren Manning, Anthony Reid, David Leslie, Tiff Needell, Arturo Mezzario, rally legends Rauno Aaltonen and Rosemary Smith, lady Indycar stars Lyn St. James and Desiré Wilson, 'Smokin' John Rhodes, Win Percy, John Fitzpatrick, Marc Surer, Frank Sytner, Stuart Graham, Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams, the late Tony Lanfranchi, actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson, ITV F1 pundit Tony Jardine and the incomparable Gerry Marshall. The 1960s grid features such cars as the Mini Cooper, Lotus Cortina, Jaguar Mk2, Alfa Romeo 1600 GTA, Hillman Imp, Mercedes-Benz 300SE, BMW 1800 TiSA, plus Ford’s Anglia, Mustang, Falcon and leviathan Galaxie. When staged for 1950s cars, the action centres on Jaguar MkVII and 2.4-litre MkI, Morris Minor, Austin A35 and A40, MG Magnette and Riley 1.5, Ford 100E and Zephyr/Zodiac, Alfa Romeo Giulietta Ti, DKW, Lancia Aurelia B10, Peugeot 203, Standard Ten and Sunbeam Rapier.

Like I said in the above quote... 'one-off' race meetings. Goodwood doesn't clash with the F1 calendar, or at least, hasn't in the past. So that wouldn't cause an issue.
I was under the impression that people in the early part of this thread thought that he had an insight into F1 because he raced. I said that I didn't think he did, at least not regularly and certainly not in single-seaters, which he would need to have a better understanding of F1.

He may not be a regular racer but he does at least have some race experience, which is better than anyone else on the ITV team (with the exception pof Blundell and Brundle, of course). Also, he has been around quite a long time. I have him on video providing the BBC's commentary for the 1985 German GP. Murray was otherwise occupied commentating on the British Motorcycle GP that weekend.

I have to admit, race commentary was not Jardine's forte.

Well I was nearly right.

PEOPLE: TONY JARDINE
Name: Tony Jardine
Nationality: Great Britain
The son of a Royal Navy pilot who was stationed at the Simon's Town naval base near Cape Town, Jardine grew up in South Africa although every summer he returned to Liverpool, where his mother's family originated from. When he was seven he was taken to the British Grand Prix which took place at the Aintree circuit, in the suburbs of Liverpool. The family returned to England in 1962 after his father died, and in his teens Jardine made a deal with his stepfather: to complete his studies in exchange for help in motor racing when his studies were finished. Jardine finished school and went to the University of Warwick to study psychology and sociology. He became a teacher and started racing an old Formula Ford until a huge accident at Oulton Park put him into hospital. In order to buy another racing car he decided to look for a better job, joined the British Council and went to work at the English School in Kuwait City. A talented artist, Jardine drew cartoons for the Kuwait Times in the evenings. He discovered rallying and convinced the local Datsun dealer to back his adventures on the Kuwait Rally.

After a brief spell teaching in Iran, he returned to England and bought himself a rally car. He then found he did not have the money necessary to run it properly and so took a job as a truck driver. Not long afterwards he joined Goodyear Racing as a driver/tire fitter. After one season he was asked by Herbie Blash of Brabham if he would like to be the assistant team manager and he joined the team in 1978. The following year he stayed in England and helped Gordon Murray in the team's drawing office while also exploring a career as a stand up comic. He was about to give up the sport for the theater when he received an offer to be Teddy Mayer's assistant at McLaren. A year later the team was taken over by Ron Dennis and Jardine was fired.

He decided he wanted to learn more about sponsorship and, after three months in the United States, he set up a London office for a company called Busch Marketing in Minneapolis. After two years organizing marketing promotions for different companies he was hired by CSS Promotions in London as a sponsorship coordinator for the John Player Special account. JPS was involved with Team Lotus in F1, in powerboat racing and in motorcycles. In 1985 he decided to set up his own business and landed his first account - with the Virgin Atlantic airline company. In 1987 he added Camel and has since represented a variety of companies in various sports, including BP, Autoglass, Sasol and Yamaha.

When he was with CSS Jardine began a secondary career as a broadcaster, doing radio work for Independent Radio News in England, for the South African Broadcasting Corporation and for Sky TV. He also did some work for the BBC, including standing in for Murray Walker as commentator for the 1985 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring.

In 1993, following the death of James Hunt, Jardine became the BBC pitlane reporter and, when ITV took over the Formula 1 coverage for the British market, he was hired as one of the commentary team.

Jardine remains a rally fan and competes regularly on the RAC Rally, the British round of the World Rally Championship.

Thank's for that. Quite a varied career all in all.

My recollection of his German GP stint was correct too

I'm sure that different people will have different opinions as to whether regularly competing in the St Mary's Trophy race is "actually rac(ing) anything".
One suspects that it's a lot more that what James Allen does.

Jardine's a pretty good clubbie - better than Simon Taylor but not as good as Marcus Pye. That's about all there is to him. He makes his money from his PR agency and I've always been disappointed that despite his much vaunted connections in the F1 "inner circle" he rarely lets any titbits out - a legacy I guess of his PR business...and thus we come full circle...I won't miss him

Of course it could be a contractural thing.

ITV have actually changed the production company that produces the programmes.

you obviously didn't see the race a couple of years ago where Gerry Marshall was throwing an Alvis 'Grey Lady' around and battling for the lead - these guys don't hang around
