Don't get me wrong, I'm a Button fan through and through and was delighted with his win in Hungary. That said, I thought his post race interview in Turkey was appaling and gave the team no credit whatsoever. To say they have a huge amount to make up on Ferrari and Renault was glass 99% empty to say the least. To come home 12 seconds behind the leader and only 6 seconds behind Schumacher and Alonso after a one and a half hour race is a huge step forward for the team from where they were 6 weeks ago. Yes, they need to make up a couple of tenths a lap before they are competing for the lead, but go back a few races and it was seconds they needed to make up.

Sorry Jens but your team deserve better.

one of the things i dont like about Jensen is that he's quick to blame the car for poor performance...

I think he just says "i couldn't have driven the car any faster"

Which is very often true.

but yes, Honda have made good progress but the car still wasn't that great.

They have to have a faster car, simple as that. They are getting closer and it's merely a gee up for the team not to rest on their laurels. His win in Hungary was due to him being able to drive a underperforming car to it's limits when others couldn't. Same for all forumlas, in the rain the driver counts a lot more than in the dry and power disadvantages are often cut.

Agreed. I guess I motivate my staff with somewhere around 80% encouragement, 20% criticism. Jens has the 80/20 the other way around.

If he genuinely believes he and the team have got everything out of the car that they are able to, what else can he say? His comments in the post-race interview today seemed to me to pretty accurately explain the situation he and the team are in.

BTW, his name is spelt Jenson.

Remember at the beginning of the year the team told him he had to be more aggressive with them and tell them waht he thought - I think he's just doing this in a good way.

He's the first to work with the team, was at the main Honda factory 3 days after his race win rather than partying - think he's a bit like DC, great driver and good bloke, maybe just missing the 'killer instinct' to cause damange to others in order to win...

Top bloke and rate him

Perhaps he's been to the Nigel Mansell school of excuses.

If Shackleton had spent his time telling his crew the depth of the sh*t they were in, their bodies would still be scattered all over the South Atlantic today. Instead he motivated them by looking at how far they'd dug so far, and which bit to dig next.

I agree that the team need honest feedback on which areas to improve - we all do, otherwise we don't know how to perform better. But nobody is motivated by continually being told how badly they are doing.

Perhaps i didn't make my point clear...

oh, and sorry to the spelling police!

It's not that he cant say "we just can't match the pace of the Ferrari" - its that, he came a solid 4th - a good position, but complained about the car.

He could've easily said "the car performed very well, and we scored a solid 4th, obviously the Ferrari's and Renault's had the edge today, but i think with the right tyre and aerodynamic package [or whatever] we should be right up there with them"

I just think Jenson needs some PR lessons, Honda pays his salary - and he should at least 'try' and put a positive spin on it - after all, the car gave him his first win...

Edit: to perhaps be even clearer - The way Jenson talks, you'd think he was a world champion and would be on the top step every race, and the only thing holding him back was the car...

Can't put my finger on why, but somehow and for some reason I just don't think he's got it.

Which is a shame. Given another season there will be a whole new generation stealing his thunder, offering better soundbites, better media and probably better performances. I want to think he can become champion, but I cant see it.

Be interesting to see what will happen when the PR frenzy switches to the bright young things and he goes through a poor patch because of car/ bad luck/ mistakes. I can see him disappearing quite quickly from the upper echelons he now enjoys.

I think he'll be another Warwick/ Blundell....good, sometimes very good, but not quite there...

IMO of course. I'd love him to prove me wrong !

Here we go again...remind me which GPs Warwick and Blundell have won? No disrespect to them but these threads are just getting stupid.

Oh and someone saying "he doesn't have the killer instinct" and another having a go at him for not being nice to his team is a bit inconsistent, isn't it?

He did say that they have come a long way, know where they are weak, and are trying to address the issues.
He then said that they have some updates for Monza which will help but which will not get them ahead.

Sounded like honesty and setting expectations correctly to me.

I don't think there was anything lucky about his Hungary win; he and his team simply did a better job than anyone else.

In the interview he talked about the car lacking "in one area" but wouldn't say what. Since Honda and Renault are on the same tyres, he could only have meant the Honda motor (which i thought was one of the best) or aerodynamics/flexible wings. I'm assuming the latter...

In a later interview he talked about lacking straight line speed (and was also, to be fair, a bit more upbeat). Probably means either too little power or too much downforce needed for the corners.
