Don't know if anyone else saw it yesterday but Katherine Legge had a HUGE HUGE HUGE crash in Champ Car at 180 mph whilst running 6th with 6 laps to go. It was probably one of the biggest crashes I've ever seen in racing and I felt physically sick watching it. The car was in pieces - and she walked away from it physically unhurt. Her rear wing flew off as she was going into the 'kink' at Road America Circuit. She's one tough cookie. I hope she gets back into a car a.s.a.p coz an accident like that has got to mess you around mentally.

Just saw that, the car seemed to systematically disintegrate around the safety cell, wonderful result thanks to cutting edge design. She didn't even look shaken either.

I posted a message on this last night over on the motor racing forum. Only one small element of her rear wing became detached, not the whole wing.

It was a mighty crash and she was very, very lucky to get away with it. Although the car did its job in protecting her, don't forget that it was a structural failure that precipitated the accident in the first place. Losing rear-end downforce in a 160 to 180 mph bend is not recommended.

Any pics or video or detailed description of this crash? Did she hit a wall, or someone else, or did someone hit her, or did someone from an internet forum take off and nuke her from orbit?

Part of the rear wing fell off as she was entering a 160-180 mph right hand bend. The rear end came loose and she spun off into the concrete wall on the outside of the turn. The impact was so severe that the car was launched into a series of barrel rolls, disintegrating as it went. The debris fencing stopped the car from flying into the trees. It was spectacular but the safety features of the car (and the circuit) did their job.

didn' she end up with a bruised knee? Even so, still walked away without a cut/graze.

So her wings didn't keep her protected all day then?

It looked huge,I was surprised the cameras stayed on it for so long.
And I was watching it slightly delayed (after Marshalling all weekend) and the Sky+ box cut off before she got Out, I was manic trying to find out if she was ok.
Not bad for an old car, I hope the new Panoz Chasis is as good/better

yikes

Two phrases you don't want to hear in relation to Road America are "wing failure" and "at the kink". Glad she's ok!

Bloody hell that was a big one. Tyre barrier wouldn't have gone amiss there. Amazing that she was ok.

Nice example of how the chassis is designed so that everything breaks off it and leaves the driver in the monocoque in relative safety, she may have walke away, but i suspect she will have a slight headache.

She never does anything half measure - www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgx0PrnL34U

Good to see everything worked as it should on the Lola, first real big one like that since Kenny Brack's.
