Huge 180mph crash for Katherine
Discussion
Don't know if anyone else saw it yesterday but Katherine Legge had a HUGE HUGE HUGE crash in Champ Car at 180 mph whilst running 6th with 6 laps to go. It was probably one of the biggest crashes I've ever seen in racing and I felt physically sick watching it. The car was in pieces - and she walked away from it physically unhurt. Her rear wing flew off as she was going into the 'kink' at Road America Circuit. She's one tough cookie. I hope she gets back into a car a.s.a.p coz an accident like that has got to mess you around mentally.
I posted a message on this last night over on the motor racing forum. Only one small element of her rear wing became detached, not the whole wing.
It was a mighty crash and she was very, very lucky to get away with it. Although the car did its job in protecting her, don't forget that it was a structural failure that precipitated the accident in the first place. Losing rear-end downforce in a 160 to 180 mph bend is not recommended.

Part of the rear wing fell off as she was entering a 160-180 mph right hand bend. The rear end came loose and she spun off into the concrete wall on the outside of the turn. The impact was so severe that the car was launched into a series of barrel rolls, disintegrating as it went. The debris fencing stopped the car from flying into the trees. It was spectacular but the safety features of the car (and the circuit) did their job.

So her wings didn't keep her protected all day then?

It looked huge,I was surprised the cameras stayed on it for so long.
And I was watching it slightly delayed (after Marshalling all weekend) and the Sky+ box cut off before she got Out, I was manic trying to find out if she was ok.
Not bad for an old car, I hope the new Panoz Chasis is as good/better

Good to see everything worked as it should on the Lola, first real big one like that since Kenny Brack's.
