Was watching the quali this afternoon with a mate from work who's pretty clued up on these things, and he reckoned that once upon a time (in the 70's?) the safety car crashed during a race. Is this true? if so where and when? We tried google at the time but could'nt find nothing (and being a couple of sad b******s it's bugging us not knowing!)

Thanks for your input guys...

It crashed into Taki Inoue's Arrows at Monaco during Practice in 1995, and someone else (Forgetten who, possibly Wurz) collided with the Medical car at the Brazilian Gp. I don't remember the safety car ever crashing during a gp though.

Well, for a start, I do not recall a Safety car in F1 in the 70's.

That's Sid Watkins medical car as driven by Alex Ribero, not the pace car

The MotoGP pace car did crash one year at Jerez, it was a new AMG CL65 I think and crashed on the sighting lap just before the start.

Jean Ragnotti, hooning around in a Renault Maxi, after the end of qualifying. He went around so quickly, whilst Inoue was simultaneously plodding along on his way back to the pits, that Ragnotti smacked into the back of him. I think it was at Tabac corner.

Very funny!

I can accept an SC in a race in North America, but if you watch historical broadcasts I certainly haven't seen one used in Europe until the 90's

First use was in Canada 73 where it buggered up the race by taking up its place in front of the wrong car. It then disappeared until Brazil in 1993.

Not F1 but funny nonetheless.

I used to be an Event Manager at Whilton Mill (Outdoor hospitality centre). Anyway, one of the perks was driving the pace kart for the rolling start on the national circuit.

Baring in mind the staff used to spend hours hooning around the track we could all peddle the corporate thunderkarts around the track quicker than vitually all the customers. The challenge was that the pack needed to be held together and in formation for the warm-up lap but the pace kart couldn't get off the track until immediately after the start line with a 90 degree left exit slip with no run-off area - basically you had to skid the thing off the track in order to stop before the large wooden fence. So you needed a small gap by the startline.

Well, one day I'm backing everyone up down the back straight, then nail it through the last two corners in order to give myself a sllight gap to get off the track safely - except I take a little too much kerb on the last corner, pushing me wide onto the green plastic grate on the exit causing a 180 degree spin! yikes I ended up crossing the start line backwards facing the entire pack of about 25 karts who were going either side of me at full tilt. I was terrified someone wouldn't see me and have a mahooosive head-on!

Ofcourse, the shame of having to walk back into the control room afterwards was only slightly better than the constant abuse over the radio for the rest of the evening. paperbag

I think Inoue was being towed back to the pits having stopped out on track. Ragnotti hit the back of his car and flipped it leaving Inoue on his head. I seem to remember he had loosened/removed his belts (as the session was over) but luckily left his helmet on which saved him from serious injury in the incident!

A few years ago, on the Saturday, one of the Arrows (?) drivers took the door off the course car.

That would be the same one I mentioned a few posts back.

Thinking back it might have been a Z8.

I'm sure Heidfeld in his Sauber took the door off the SC at the Brazilian GP in 2002/3.

At Brands Hatch a few years ago the pace car for a kart race spun at Pddock Hill bend, the Karts behind weren't sure what to do! Was very funny.

I can't recall any occasion when the F1 Safety Car has crashed, although believe it has spun in practice. It does go out and practice before a race!
