Don't know if any of you go to combe on regular basis [apart from Atomic rex who races an RX7]the Gt championship seems to have taken off big style this year huge grids again bringing back the good old day's of the early nineties.

The bank holiday monday coming the championship celebrates 25 years with two races as the championship has had to be split with Class A&B for the prototypes like radicals,Jades in one race and the C&D class with all the modified saloons and sportscars like Jon Reeves RX7 taking on ferrari 360's of which there are 5 racing And also Vince Woodman is wheeling out his classic Cologne capri which was one mighty beast back in the late seventies and early eighties a motor that will bring back some real memories for me here's the timetable and entrylist for the day

Those were the day's Phil i still have vivd memories of your Skoda in body only really if you're honest, wasn't it powered by a Tiga engine if i remember correctly?
I can still recall the day at work when i said about the laps times a skoda was doing at combe the blokes all laughed at me till the day they saw you race one moment i'll never forget open mouths and all lol

I have been invited back for the occasion, so please come and say hello. We (Mobile Windscreens) are still involved with the circuit as we sponsor the saloon car championship and invite around 200 customers to each meeting, including the bikes.

My colleague and good friend George Douglas will not be there on the day as he is racing the Ginetta G12 and the Martin BM9 at the Oulton Gold Cup meeting. He had the Ginetta out again at Combe at the last meeting. Combined age of driver and car 101!

The Skoda was based on a Tiga Sports 2000 chassis with a 4.5 litre Rover V8 (built by NCK in Coventry, now called TVR Power) and a Hewland FGA box. Very quick and lovely to drive. So much torque that I never used first gear, even off the line. Good for 90 in second, 119 in third and 141 in fourth. Used to hit the rev limiter between Folly and Camp in fifth; this was worked out to be 168mph at 7500. The best lap time was 59.05 on the old circuit, pre-chicanes; just over 113mph average.

So how do think the car would compete against the radicals and Jades these day's Phil? i know perhaps the circuit layout did help a bit without the chicanes back in the early day's when paddock was a proper cornersmile
Something you may like to do is join the castle combe forum being an active member i'm sure you'd be well recived.
Its good to see mobile windscreens still supporting one of the championships at combe and to be honest the names become a household name with many who regularly attend the circuit and supporting the saloons seems to be the right choice all cars need windscreens afterall i just hope we get good weather next monday with the prospect of seeing Vince Woodmans capri will make the meeting for me i just hope he can get it within the noise limitssmile

That's what I raced for four years before the Skoda. Maguire Stilleto with a one litre Hartwell engine. Some trick induction work gave 118 BHP at the wheels at Sigma's rolling road in Gillingham, Dorset. First time that I have ever known Ray Payne (RIP) lost for words!

I remember the car and you racing it, showed a clean pair of heels to a lot of larger engined stuff if I remember correctly. 118bhp at the wheels though eek. I'm 30bhp shy of that with my 998!

My memory must be lapsing wasn't the Combe GT known as the castle special saloon championship in the early days?
I can also remember Brian Fisher also used to have a skoda,David Appleby in his Metro 6r4's and that prototype he raced for a while,Nigel Mustells mental sierra Rs500,all the prosport 3000's that used to take part have all seemed to have dissappeared a number did get heavly damaged at quarry in a rain storm.
These day's it seems its either a Jade or a radical is the car to have in class A and Bsmile

The last prosport 3000 I recall seeing there (last year was it?) was the silver one.

It started to look very tired, and battle scarred. I recall reliability being a bit of an issue, and it rarely seemed to finish.

Mine was last used in CC GT before I got it, (John Barnard).

One day I will get round to returning it to CC GT, it's just finding the time (with out commitments).
