Am I the only one who thinks Alonso is rather lucky to still have a drive in the McLaren after he tried to blackmail Ron Dennis?

He knew about the emails discussing the Ferrari data that Mclaren were using. After Hungarian qualifying and the farce in the pit-lane, Alonso apparently went to Ron and demanded number 1 status in the team, else he would go to the FIA and dump Mclaren in it. Ron didn't back down and went to the FIA himself. (And got his team a $100m fine and booted out of championship).

Subject to contract law, I'd have booted the wop out on principle. Dennis has principles, Alonso doesn't.

If he ends up winning, I bet he stays (through contractual obligation) - if Lewis or Kimi win he'll be off quicker than roadrunner with willy coyote up his arse

I bet there are loads of hidden perks & packages available to the champion driver and his team from Bernie & FIA.

As McClaren will have zero points this season they will have to pay for all freight to fly away races, have reduced access to Paddock club for sponsors, have less garage space and less paddock space for Ron's mobile home fleet amongst many current benefits they get as a top four team. If they can claw anything back on the quiet then I'd guess they will try. They have already lost £35 mill in prize money and will not win any more (obviously) this season and been fined £15 mill in real money - next seasons budget will be tight.

Having number 1 stickered car at the wrong end of the pitlane will also remind the others in the cheap seats who the neighbours really are.

If I was Ron I wouldn't sack him. If he's sacked then he has an excuse for not winning this year, he can find another team etc

Noooo. I'd ensure that his car always has 10BHP (say) less than it could. Just enough to make it look like his car is OK but he is driving off the pace. Let him win the odd point or two even. But never challenge for the title.

I was thinking that FA's car might find itself slightly technically challenged smile

I thought they could fill it with diesel? That way even David '10th place' Coulthard might get past!

Edited for clarity based on all of the news reports and the FIA's own findings smile. There were loads of emails sharing data, but (according the FIA & McLaren) they were limited between the two spanish drivers and Coughlan, they were not using the McLaren email servers and the team were unaware of them. Hence Ron's willingness to whistle blow... I beleive he really did have no clue the mails existed.

Also of some note that Jesus, sorry, Hamilton was not privy to the information. Alonso desperate for the edge maybe? wink

I think that McLaren should make Alonso stick his contract out to the last minute but treat him with just enough contempt to make the guys stay hell, but just enough niceness to keep Mosley off their back. Either that or make it hellish expensive for him to leave early so they can claw some of their fine back if need be.
I know I guy in the Machine shop back in Woking and you can bet that Alonso is Not popular within the team in any way. He's burned that bridge totally.

There was a report on one of the sites yesterday saying that FA had offered each of the guys in his side of the race team £650 if they helped him to beat LH, to me that smells of desperation, having to pay the people who should be wanting to do it as their everyday job.

I also have heard from someone in the factory that his likeabilty in the team has been going down over the summer, and that this weekend at Spa was as low as it has ever been.

I hadn't seen that they were using their personal email accounts - have you got a link to that story?

I'd heard he was offering as much as £10k per mechanic, and if true I don't know why it should be surprising, or be seen as something desperate or shady in the least. Crikey, who ever heard of employees being incentivised beyond their basic salaries to perform better. Someone had better tell the City quick.

Even more of a reason to do something to get his guys back on side if his popularity has been ahem, compromised, recently.

I see nothing wrong with that, or with Alonso keeping his set-up details private from Lewis. Sounds much more like intense competition for a world championship and far less like a cold war spy novel. Hurrah.

- edited because I realised I'd said nothing on topic - Yes, I think FA's lucky to still have a job. But I think he's earned that by being a double world champion - I also think he's now used up all of his grace in that respect; I doubt he'll get away with it again and it's probably left him on a very precarious standing.

The one name missing from this thread is Santander.

I'd guess they are more than jittery at the moment - both on a commercial front with what's going on in the world's banking market and sponsoring team that has been shown to be less than clean. The thought of a Spanish sponsor loosing a Spanish driver is likley to be a bit too much to bear.

DLR could fill the breach but of course he is implicit in the situation equally with FA.

It's interesting though that all McLaren sponsors have stod firm with McLaren. I remember in the 80s when Brundle tipped the Tyrrell on its side at Monaco, two drains were revealed on the underside that were subsiquently proved to be a water dump to allow the car to pass the weight test prior to qualifying but dump water to run lighter during qualifying before getting a water top-up before the end of the session. This was cheating - plain and simple and their title sposnor: DeLonghi, parted company straight away!
