Big Bathurst fan from an early age. Just been watching loads of stuff on You-tube and I saw Brocky racing an old A30 in the 60s/70s.

All I can find is that it had a "179 Holden" engine which means nothing to me. Anyone able to enlighten me?

" 179 " was a reference to to the engine capacity in cubic inches . It was a straight 6 . The motor was introduced in around 1964 ?
eta Ben yes the 3.3L is the 202. 179CI is 2933cc

IIRC the 179 was one of the original Holden "Grey" series 6 cyl engines. I think there was also a 138, 149, and the 179 "pusuit" or similar, IIRC from a Canadian market(?) with a steel crank. I might be a bit confused though, many years ago.
These were replaced by the "Red" series 6 cylinders, 161, 186 then 173 and 202CI. My first car was a 1971 GTR Torana with the 161"S" engine.

Close but No cigar....
The 179 was Indeed a red motor, it had a forged steel crank and an HP identifying mark.
I had one in my wonderful 1964 EH Wagon (original motor too, I was 2nd owner)
It was the hottest straight 6 motor of the day.
Coupled to a wide ratio crash 3 on the tree.....Awesome.

BTW, was it a good race?
Oh yes yes started raining 12 laps from the end, made the last bit of the race pretty interesting!

what a race, highlights were great.

V8 engine, slicks, Bathurst in the wet.... wow them guys can drive rotate

One of those classic Bathurst's, even after 6 hours of racing, still goes down to a battle on the last lap.... totaly brilliant.

I was pissed off that luck had eluded GT yet again, but the finish was great. Even though I am more a Holden fan than Ford (even though I bought a Falcon XR6 I'm looking for an HSV next) I was actually hoping Junior Johnson was going to win. Would have been good odds on that I reckon.

yes Any of the top 4 or 5 were in with a good chance right up until the end really, there was some stunning driving by all of them in those last laps IMO.

The Toll Holdens suffered a lot from the brake troubles, but GT (or Kelly, i forget who was driving at the time) threw the car off the track more than once as well, I think just overdriving it trying to make a car with dodgy brakes lap at healthy-car pace. Radisich/Baird in the other one seemed to be driving a smart, consistent race I though, seeming to suddenly appear in 5th getting towards the end before having to pit and bleed the brakes. Similar to Bright, running out of sequence and timed it right to inherit the lead, would have had a good chance too if his crew hadn't put a set of fresh cold slicks on it just after the rain started.

I'm a bit of a Ford fan anyway and have a lot of respect for Lowndes' driving, so pretty happy with the result really smile

Wahey - Bathurst was good fun! Backpacking around the world it just happened to coincide!

Top of the mountain is similar to Le Mans - not as bad as I was expecting. Atmosphere of a 24hr race still beats everything - having a ball to the soundtrack of the race.

Aussie police are very tough on trouble (bit OTT) and as for speeding I'm glad I'm in a slow old campervan!

Meanwhile - off to Phillip Island for the bike GP this weekend!

When I get round to un packing my boxes of stuff I’ll have to see if i still have my copies of Hardys Heros from the late 80's.

Jim Richards in his JPS 635 was always a favourite of mine when I were a lad.

That is Aweome - had one once - (it never ran - wel the engine did but box had seized - given by my mother to play with in a barn). Must be mental with 3.0 Straight 6!
