Alex Wurz has confirmed that he is to retire from racing in the FIAFormula 1World Championship with immediate effect.

The Austrian, who returned to the cockpit this year after a long spell testing, has struggled on the whole in comparison to his WilliamsF1team-mate Nico Rosberg and rumours of his decision to hang up his helmet surfaced over the weekend in China

Karthikeyan most likely to replace him at Brazil!

I hope he returns to DTM or LM - he was rather good, youngest ever Le Mans winner iirc.

the best F1 test driver and a jolly nice chap

still bloody odd to pack it in now - wouldn't u think, one last race might as well finish the season.
It's not like Karthikeyan is going to out score him

his reason is he has "doubts".....and the minute you get these is the minute to stop.

Good on him.

I was in Monaco for his battle with Scumacher in '98, and his podium at Silverstone in '97. Both stunning drives.

And someone who's decided to call it day when he felt it was the right time but still maintain good relationships with the team. He might have had an up & down season but he's still only two points behind his much acclaimed team mate and he did catch and pass Rosberg in China as well. Maybe he wanted to go out on a high or perhaps he just didn't want to fly into Sao Paolo ever again, for that I wouldn't blame him.

Nakajima Jnr for Brazil.

Did anybody really think that he would do anything in GP?
Apart from Frank that is!

Don't forget he spent years at McLaren as a test driver. If anyone can bring useful knowledge to the team at a time when it was at rock bottom, he could. I don't think he's been a really bad race driver, either. Just lacking in motivation, Hakkinen style, perhaps?

While he was/is damn quick in test situations, he's not been able to convert that into race pace. Look at PDLR at McLaren. Molto Rapido in test situations, but way off in race conditions.

Then you get the "real racers", who don't qualify well, but pull through in the race.

Sadly, Alex isn't one of them.

I think he'll return to test duties, as he has plenty of ability there.

Who's gonna replace him for one race....

Is Mansell busy?

OK, slap me!

He had a big off, slapped a tyre barrier quite hard, around the time they were all doing it.
He was never the same after that.

I think Wurz has been very unlucky to have his chance to return to racing this season. Nearly all season the midfield has been seperated in qualifying by around half a second - that's covered about 10 positions, sometimes more. Wurz has just lacked those final couple of tenths so consequently has ended up at the back of this group more often than not.

Sometimes he's managed to get through and score points or a podium, but most of the time he's been stuck behind the car infront, just like everyone else.

I'f he'd been able to make his racing comeback a couple of seasons ago he wouldn't have had the qualifying problem as they were much more spread out.

Bourdais was in his second year of a 2 year contract

Vettel had (still has) close BMW connections

Wurz's main issue was getting the car set up properly for quali.

To call him "crap" is churlish IMHO, but I'm sure you didn't really mean to use such an emotive word.

But he wasn't likely to hold onto his seat for next year. I think FW and he agreed that it would be beter to give Nakajima a run out in the car in race conditions to see what he was made of. I'd imagine Wurz will remain with Williams as a test driver in some capacity.

A good driver in his day that didn't seem to get on as well on his return as in his first front line stint. Shame, seemed like a nice bloke compared to a lot of the current prima donnas.

I always love the idea that a mid-field GP driver is "crap"!!

These guys do something that most of us couldn't do with all the training and simulator work in the world. Most of them, including Alex, are technically superb and are able to translate what they feel the car doing into meaningful words that the engineers can use to improve the car.

I'm glad he's going out on a high and maintaining his links with the team, I'm told he is very popular within Williams. This way it allows Williams to put someone else in the car for the last race to generate some interest amongst other drivers and give someone else a chance.

Good luck to Alex in what he does next, hopefully we will see him back at Le Mans - he's one of the nice guys thumbup

Absolutely, I would sell my granny to have half the talent.

Wurz being 'crap' in 2005:

He went on to finish 3rd in the GP behind Alonso and Schumacher.

Never did fancy her though - had a soft spot for Sarah Greene though (did anyone see that episode where they wore Victorian underwear?...I'm pretty sure I have it on video somewhere)...

A little anecdote. In the summer, RBS ran an F1 simulator competition in Broadgate Arena - London. The finalists were put up against Wirz and Rosberg. What was interesting was how Rosberg was straight on it - set the fastest time and was ultra smooth - totally focussed too and made no mistakes.

Wurz, once he had removed his shoes (size 11 at least) and took the rallycross line - he was dreadful and finished last. Noticeably less smooth in the car.

Whenthe heart isn't in it it's time to stop.

Anyone who has ever skied regularly (for example) knows that 'one last run before I take the skis and boots back' is the one you break you leg on.

When you make the decision to stop do it there and then, anything else is just exposure to unnecessary risk.
