Also, Mansell's flat was hardly "very nice" - his then nextdoor neighbours are friends of my family; they don't recall it being very plush, and I don't suspect Hall Green was back then either.
Hall Green is a nice suburb of Brum, certainly not your average first time buyer market which mansell would/should have been in at his age.

I didn't realise Lewis was in the young guns team as early as 10. Mr Hamilton must have been working bloody hard at the time, is all i can think.

I must admit though, i have signed up to the Hamilton story full time biggrin. I think its brilliant, and i think the pair of them are a blast of fresh air in f1 and motorsport generally. He's a fantastic kid and a fantastic racer. Oh, the Hamilton Factor is sweeping through karting big time too, with no end of dads pushing their youngsters into the game.

Here's to another fantastic four way fight next year.

Not really sure it's a good thing, the pushy dad is a dangerous game. There was a nasty cadet crash at shenington last week, the kid was nearly killed. We don't want karting banned.

Push the kids that want to race not the ones dad feels should race.

My son is nearly 8, he's a little soft and I've said he can have full 100% support if he wants to race karts, I'll not push him as it's still very dangerous.

Won't name the track, but i've been on a test where we were mixed with first time cadets, going into a corner at 100mph with little jimmy spinning infront of you is rather lethal....

Why aren't we hearing an even greater chorus of complaints about Nico Rosberg, Nelsinho Piquet, Marco Andretti, Graham Rahal, Greg Mansell and Henry Surtees, all of whose dads were both rich and very well connected to the levers of power within motorsport?

How odd that Lewis Hamilton, the one who has accomplished the most, after having started with the least, is the chosen target of invective.
If one were cynical, one would definitely wonder what exactly was colouring people's opinions, as it were, about this hard working, articulate young man, who has risen, through talent, from a very moderate background, to have an utterly unprecedented impact in his first year n F1.

As you say, most others in the sport come from pretty privileged backgrounds, yet it is young Lewis who is called "spoiled". The fact he has not dumped his father as his manager seems to rile some people on here. This is pretty bizarre.

Hamilton had nothing, i mean, lets not beat about the bush, he was even the wrong colour. All he had was his personality and his dad, that's all.

You know what! I think this is a case of many feeling there father/dad failed them, how many people have that sort of father..... Lewis is a very lucky lad, his dad is a great man.

Can't remember the last time my father rang me.....he won't even watch me race!!!!! in a very deep hidden way I feel very jealous and a little sad, but that's life.

O well.
