Which ones were they John? My uncle until very recently worked at Historic Raceprep (previously JTM)in Fernhurst and prepped the John Whitmore (Alan Mann) Mustang, plus I think the Derek Bell and possibly Rowan Atkinson Mustangs too, and also one of the Galaxies I think.
He didnt prepare the Mustang Rowan Atkinson was driving, as that one was built and prepared by my step farther John Freeman (not John Gamblin)and I also helped him over the revival weekend.LocoBlade said:
Hi Ian
Cheers for that, wasnt sure but knew it had links somewhere along the line. John Gamlin (no b!) is my uncle, your step-dad also used to work at JTM but now works over at Dunsfold with Colin Denyer doesnt he?
cheers
Chris
Yes thats right he used to work with Jim Morgan at JTM but now has started a new business and rents some floor space at Colin Denyers. The blue Mustang that Rowan Atkinson was driving was Johns first car to be completed since he started the business. Cheers for that, wasnt sure but knew it had links somewhere along the line. Poor form IMO.
When it is a ‘Challenge’ or informal ‘Cup’ type event or series there of it is one thing and to be honest so long as everyone is happy does it really matter. Most cars could be deemed illegal by dint of one thing or another. I have known of a car that failed post race scrutinering on the basis of something that was done to it in period but which had never been known of or found by the historic racer 20 odd years after then event.
On the other hand Goodwood in particular now carries so much cachet that these things need to be enforced rigorously or else we will end up with grids of ‘chassis plate specials’.

If you are such an idiot that a really simple thing like taking the rocker covers off shows you to be cheating then you deserve everything you get.
Having said that you could stroke you engine and get alot more power on the gamble that they woul have to take the heads off - but even this is easy if someone appeals (coughs up the cash - and you can bet the people at Goodwood competing would do this - thing appeal is something like £150).
Cheating is cheating.

The scrutineers sent the top three cars to post race parke ferme where they had the documents checked, the cars were weighed and they also carried out a capacity check on the engine. To do this on a V8 you have to remove the rocker covers, take a couple of pushrods out, remove the spark plug from that cylinder and screw in an adaptor for the volume testing tube the scrutineers use. The tube is then attached to the adapter and you crank the engine over a few times, this then moves a piston in the tester that pushes a limit marker up the tube. That limit marker tells you the capacity of that cylinder, which you then multiply by the number of cylinders to give you the engine capacity.
They started checking this way last year at Goodwood with a few random checks, our McLaren was one of those checked last year. They told me their reading, which was close enough to reality to be a useful tool for them. This year they used it more extensively, checking all the top V8 finishers including our cars again.
Depending on the car it can take a bit of time to get the engine in a state to test, but nothing too bad, probably 30 minutes pre and post the test with a bit of time to let the car cool down before starting work.

Yes we probably did then at some point! did you have a chat with John at the Spa 6hr race? as we have been wondering who you are? thats the problem with a forum. lol
lol, it's a nightmare isnt it. The main person i spoke to from Alan Manns team was a young New Zealand lad, he was interested in our McLaren. We were in the next pit to Alan Mann's, so i may have talked to John?Gassing Station | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
