Autosport article
Montezemolo said:
Alonso is a real champion, in every sense, an extraordinary driver. I've really appreciated his sportsmanship.
Is this the same Alonso that Ferrari believe personally, wilfully used their stolen data? Wow, that sure is praiseworthy sportsmanship. As days go by it looks more and more as if Alonso and Ferrari are courting each other.

Nothing that comes out of Ferrari suprises me,its actually disapointing as i was always a Ferrari fan - how they can be proud of winnng the constructors championship through default and the drivers through sheer luck (badluck at Mclaren) is beyond me. Alonso popping up there would not suprise me with Mclaren data on his laptop.

They do seem to have a similar view on sportsmanship though...

The topic of this thread should have been "How to quote out of context to suit your agenda". Poor form.

I have no agenda, I'm simply gobsmacked by Montezemolo's statement.

Don't you find it hypocritical to praise Alonso's sportsmanship (in any context) after his core involvement in the spying scandal which Ferrari pursued so fervently in the name of sporting fairness?

I agree Gruffy, Zaktoo obvioulsy cant see what you are getting at for some strange reason. How can Ferrari praise the guy that was involved in the Spy Gate? Would they be praising him if Lewis had won and they ended up with nothing bar a constructors championship through default?

In a way, i hope Mclaren win the appeal and they end up with Lewis winning the title through default - Just to piss them off.

Well, his drivers won the championship, and he was appraising all drivers on their respective seasons. He was equally praising Hamilton's season. Would you have preferred he said "They haxx0red but we still pwned them, n00bs! Muhahahaha!!!111!11"?

The fact that Alonso talked out against his own team's 'cheating' by 'using Ferrari information' will have led to de Montezemolo saying he is a wonderful, fair man.

Not saying I agree, but I can see why de Montezemolo (obviously biased towards Ferrari) might think such a thing.

That ignores the fact that Alonso was one of three McLaren employees who were shown to be doing the cheating. That's where the hypocrisy lies.

i'm just disappointed in his viewpoint that winning a title (constructors) in the court is every bit as sweet as winning it on the track. you just know he'd find cause for complaint if lewis won the drivers championship as a result of the BMW / Williams exclusion!

What has struck me is the sheer dignity of Ron, on TV after the race he was most gracious in defeat.

Compare this to the rather spolit attitude of Di Cockezemolo. I was reading an article at lunchtime where he was banging on about fairness and justice in this year's result as if he felt this need to convince people.

Lord Luca is the guy who two months ago was pontificating that it would be best for the sport if no one said anything about the spying allegations prior to the second hearing, whilst at the same time his most senior employee Todt was blabbing incessantly to the media.

As I said at the time, it was a classic case of the organ grinder complaining that the monkey was dancing too much.

I assume Ferrari is in F1 ultimately to help sell road cars, therefore i am surprised at how childish and vindictive their top man is. Does he not realize that his behaviour may turn some people off the idea of buying a Ferrari, it certainly has turned me off.

I have admired Ferrari since i was a child but now i am in a position to afford one i find myself not wanting to belong to that crowd. This is a direct result of how they prostitute their name to cheap products and how Montezemolo and some of his team behave.

Someone's lost something.

I think that when supposedly Monte praises Alonso he means Hamilton as he says: “He lost the championship by a point . . .” And to prove it:

Der Montezemolo was critical of Lewis Hamilton's driving in Brazil.

“Hamilton made an error driven by youth and nervousness. Had he stayed behind Alonso, instead of trying to attack him, he would be champion now.”

The attempt to retain his position was not what cost him the race. Perhaps Monte is talking about another GP.

He goes on to say, supposedly about LH:

“But I must also recognise that during the season he did not always hold an exemplary behaviour.”

I can’t help but believe that, out of Raik, LH and FA, the only person whose behaviour fell far, far below what could be classed as exemplary was Alonso when he cheated and threatened his team principal.

So I think it is quite clear that the person he meant to praise was, indeed LH and not that other bloke.

Has Monte lost it? He certainly seems very confused as to whom he is talking about and what races he was watching. Either that or there was an awful lot that was lost in translation.

Its just an attempt to undermine the LH/McClaren partnership. As for silly decisions, if FA hadn't blocked LH in Hungary, he would have been further up the grid with more points and this years championship in his pocket.

I like the bit of spin he put on Alonso's result: 'He lost the Championship by a point.' Not, you notice, 'he came third', but suggesting second place and only just. And not mentioning that he was behind the driver whom Monte has just rubished.

Nice touch.

Ron in the post race interview have a sly dig at Ferrari for trying to win in the courts and wanting to win on the track, just before heading to the courtbiggrin

I always thought it was the other way round - Ferrari sell road cars at massively inflated prices to subsidise their F1 efforts?
