Hamilton has also talked about his belief in God, saying: "I feel quite safe on the track. I know He's always looking after me."

And he has added: "I never think about being killed on the track at all. I don't have any fear out there."

I feel quite safe on the track. I know He's always looking after me

Lewis Hamilton discusses his faith
Remarks like this are unusual for a racing driver, most of whom are strongly aware of the risks of what they do, even if they like not to
think about them too much.

Hmmm.... not so good, racers that have no fear end up dead, that would be a very sad loss indeed.

Devout?

Love thy neighbour. Unless it's Prost.

he's also brown bread...

Senna had a respect for the risks and often backed off, the famous Monaco lap springs to mind.

didnt senna say: you either face up to those risks, deal with it and get on with the job in hand.

or you turn away and dont do it again.

I've not read the article but I don't see anything hugely wrong with the bits that you've quoted.

All drivers will seek to minimise risk where possible but if they think directly about the risk of death when they are in a race car then it's time to give up.

Nothing wrong with what he said, I find it interesting as I'm yet to meet a driver who does not feel fear in a kart/car at some point, it checks you in check. I'm wondering if it's media spin or he has a deathwish :-)

Roman Catholic afaik.

daily telegraph said:
Fellow Brazilian and fellow three-times world champion, Nelson Piquet, a free-spirited playboy, had no time for Senna's Roman Catholic fundamentalism. While Senna retired into the back of the McLaren motorhome with his Bible and made claims to have seen a vision of Jesus Christ at Suzuka in 1988 where he won after stalling on the start line, and to have been guided by the voice of God at Monaco in 1990, when he beat Jean Alesi in one of the great races of all time, Piquet poured on the insults. "He's nothing but a Sao Paulo taxi driver," being one of his more printable sneers.

Telling other drivers that you put your trust in the almighty is a sure way of them giving you a wide berth.

You can't think about the fear or its time to hang up your helmet.
Fear is eased by experience the only thing I fear is the unpredictability of other drivers. On a track on my own I would be as relaxed as I could possibly be.

To be honest it's fairly normal to not think about the danger when you're driving. I'm a complete coward hehe and I'm scared of most things - flying, heights, you name it; and the danger of motor racing has always really bothered me, but only when I'm not in the car. Before a race, I am acutely aware that I might end up in hospital or something, but I honestly can't recall a time that I've ever been in the least bit scared at all in a racing car. When out on my own I'm totally relaxed and focused, and in a race I'm just concentrating hard. I think I speak for most drivers to be honest.

I remember testing last November at Silverstone. It was my first time out in my new racing car and it was hovering around freezing and the track was wet. I was on the pit wall just checking out the track surface when this girl loses it in a single seater on the kink in the start/finish straight (that's a very fast point on the track if you're not familiar with it). She smashes straight into the wall right in front of me. After ten seconds of silence she starts to move and trys to pull herself out of the car but can't, so I have to just watch her struggling whilst the ambulance comes steaming round. Ten minutes later I was sideways through Copse at 80mph and pushing hard for a good time in an unfamiliar car. I'm a fairly sensitive guy, and not in any way fearless or macho, but for some reason, once in a car with a helmet on, it's just like a computer game, and I think I speak for most people.

By the way, the thought of a driver thinking some imaginary bloke in the sky with a beard is behind him scares the willies out of me hehe

Sorry, I was on the inside - she ran wide and hit the wall opposite me. But yes, it is always a good idea to be alert when spectating:

Know that place well, standing there would have been fun. An engine block passed over the heads of some people a few years back, from an F3 car I think :-(

RobMM what you said was spot on, including the beard part HAHA

It was a whole F3 car - under braking for the chicane (at the other end of the track), it was launched over the catch fencing, over the banking and landed in the bushes. Sadly one of its wheels hit a spectator on the head on the way - not fatally, but she was in a coma for a while. frown

Believing in God is probably a good way to deal with potential fear and even derive inspiration from. So don't knock the power of such belief. Lots of famous sports stars and other high achievers have been religious.

I'm a firm non-believer BTW, which is probably a disadvantage!

As said above, like a lot of drivers I've never felt fear when actually in a car, so I guess I'm lucky. I'm actually a strong athiest, but I can understand why believing someone's watching over you would help. I'm about to read Senna's biography, so it's something I'll bear in mind! smile

Personally, I tend to use the praying time on a Sunday morning to check my brakes and suspension are looking solid before a race wink
