Does anyone run their own cars in the series, or is it all teams and arrive and drive?

What's a realistic budget these days for a one-off race and a whole season?

A one off!

£395 entry fee
£671 Engine lease
£723 Tyres
£100 Race fuel

plus Insurance
plus Car Hire
plus Race prep and team costs
plus own expenses!

I'm thinking about it!

Been racing my Westfield for a while now, and have always wanted to race a Tuscan.

I do however like Westfield type budgets, and wouldn't want to chuck huge amounts of cash at this, so would want to do this on a budget.

How realistic would it be to buy a car and run it myself, probably with 2nd hand slicks as well for the time being?

It depends how competitive you want to be.

As a complete newcomer to the sport this year, let alone Tuscans, I knew I would be right at the back, doing well to keep it on the black stuff, and maybe by the end of the season I might not come completely last. I therefore thought I wouldn't really get through tyres and could make do with 2nd hand ones, or make a new set last 2 or 3 races.

Then I found myself going for top 10 finishes and suddenly found myself writing large cheques to Mr Dunlop. Every weekend

As a question to you chaps.

Is the only source of funding for your racing from sponsors and one's own funds?

Is there any relationship at all with the circuits/promoters? As far as I can work out the only monies to come back to the teams from the people charging gate entry fees for tickets is the laughably small "prizes"...

Basically it costs the driver a fortune to race and everyone but the driver makes money...

I am told once upon a time that circuits actually paid drivers to race to attract the public...

In my case, it's 100% from my own funds.

I wouldn't expect to be going for wins, but on the other hand I wouldn't do it just to finish at the back of the grid, so I'd be happy with aiming at finishing in the top 10.

It'll be quite a budget jump from kits though, where I'm still making do with a set of tyres that have been on the car for about 3 years, and have done probably 2 seasons of racing!

Amazingly, they still seem to be OK, so they'll be staying on there until they're down to the canvas

Don, welcome to the bizarre world that is 'MOTORSPORT'.

Let me cite Rockingham as an example. 44,000 people there. Ok many got in for £1 courtesy of SEAT, but equally a lot paid £15.

Me, a driver? Well I paid £400 to get in, and that was just my race entry fee. All in all, the Rockingham race weekend cost me almost £4,000. Due to engine failures, that was £1,000 per lap of actual racing. Or £10 a second

I think I'd better go and lie down.....

, me! a Mages mate, they would have to be bloody hard up to ask me, tell the truth, I was asked once, about 5/6 years ago, but when I told them my views on speed limits, driving standards, and the fact that I would bring back hanging for middle lane NUMMPTIES, they put the phone down, never heard a thing since, strange that. So, no my old mate, I'm not a Mages mate, ... I'm a .... Judge

, I jest sir, I'm on jury service, can't say more, hush hush and all that.

Oh Lord Roddy

Please apply to be PM.

The world would be such a better place.

Despite a the unfair law that No 29 would always finish b4 Nos 5/6 that would no doubt be passed on the qt.

P.S. Congrats on entertaining the Camp Corner fans last BH Mon.

Hi Darren here, Having raced Tuscans for the last four years I am living proof that on a very small budget and second-hand tyres you can give the big teams a run for their money. I have had many second and thirds and finished third in the championship in 2001.The largest expense is the engine lease at (£6,750 +vat) but if it goes wrong you get a new one. I have a car for hire that you can run yourself or I could run it for you.

No:7, how very nice to hear from you, how are you mate. It's about time that we heard from another driver who is more on my level, instead of the normal no:5 and no:6 riffraff, this guy is a proper driver, like myself of course, well to be honest, he's a very good driver, well, very very good and fast, in fact he's much better then all of us, including me. I know this is hard for my fans to accept, knowing that until this moment I was indeed the "master" but he's just plain better, nothing I can do about it.

We do of course detect the work of evil little fingers at play here, no:5 and no:6 working overtime, bringing in the big guns to try and topple the "master".... Well, it's worked, no:7 is the master, no:7 is the master, no: 7 is the master
