FMC take 750hours just to prep the shell including cage. Main reason for such a time investment is that the very rarely throw the cars away, even after a major shunt. The cage is so integral and strong, that they generally peel the panels of and add another if it gets bent. I remember Marcus Gronholm rolling his Focus down a small cliff and ended up on the road at the bottom. The car carried on but was bent. They still kept the chassis and just replaced panels even after that crash. So the time investment in the beginning far out weighs the cost of having to keep building new cars.
