Can anybody, ANYBODY? explain the logic behind Peugeots use of a four speed box?

Sight and sound of Marcus "the man who never blinks" Gronholm on the rev limiter in top for what seemed like for ever made me wonder what planet Peugeot engineers are on.

“We have homologated a 4-speed as well as a 5-speed gearbox.”, explains Peugeot’s chief engineer Michel Nandon. “Despite the short gear change times on the modern sequential gearboxes, the driver loses time with a gear change. With an exact engine set up in some circumstances 4 gears will be sufficient.”

I don't think the use of the 307cc was a marketing decision (well I mean competing in top line motorsport is purely for marketing). Due to changes in the WRC regs. use of the 307cc makes sense. As mentioned earlier they can get a lower centre of gravity, and even though the car is less stiff, the weight positioning gives better performance. In addition, the aerodynamics of the cc are better than the hardtop car, enabling the use of a smaller wing with less drag. For those interested, there is a really good article in Motoring News.

'fraid I have to agree. I was horrified when Peugeot revealed what they were using as their base car. Cynical marketing of the worst kind - ugly, too. I'm sure they will get it to go well (seemed OK on the Monte) but I'm sure their real agenda was to butch-up this insipid bit of eye candy. 206 it aint.

And nothing to do with getting the 307CC on TV to boost sales? Perhaps I'm getting cynical in my old age.
