F1 Donington 1993

I must have seen that lap of Donington in '93 a hundred times, and the way Senna passes Karl Wendlinger in the Craner Curves never ceases to amaze me. Anyone who's ever watched any kind of racing car through there knows that Senna's move is pushing the boundary's of what's possible. An awesome, if flawed talent, and still my ultimate hero. He was far from being the best, most complete racing driver of all time, but I firmly beleive that he is the fastest person ever to sit in an F1 car.

I must be showing my age big time but it doesnt seem like all that long ago to me.
I spent the GP weekend up there with my old man, the Saturday qualifying was awesome, especially the wail of the old V12 Ferraris down the straight.
On raceday we sat up near the bar, looking down on the craner curves and the old hairpin and what I saw that Sunday afternoon will stick with me for ever. Until then I was never a massive Senna fan, as being British it was Mansell we all followed around that time. But wow, what a drive by Senna, absolutely out of this world. If he hadnt have backed off towards the end of the race he would have lapped the entire field. Senna was without doubt the master of Monaco, but this GP win eclipses them all.
Theres a story to tell my grandchildren, I was
actually there !
I cried the day he was killed and still get a lump in my throat everytime I see footage of him, especially of the Donnington GP. He was the best of them all.

Only ever heard a V12 Ferrari F1 car once, at the Senna Tribute meeting at Donington last year. It was an ex-Alesi (another of my heroes) 1995 412T2.

If I remember correctly - it wasn't all skill but alot of luck and clever setup.
Williams had got there setup totally wrong - thought they were at Watkins Glen or something !
But still bloody good - reminds me of my opening lap at Donington in 2001Think I did 12 cars though on the first lap
I think I'd go so far as to say that you couldn't put one single iota of that opening lap down to luck, not a single jot.

To be honest, after the first lap, the race settled down to the more usual F1 procession. I seem to remember Prost going into the pits multiple times as he dithered overt tyre choice. Other than that, not a lot of action )although it's nice to see aesthetically attractive F1 cars in action rather than the current ugly looking high nose shoe boxes).
